NYP Staff Branch’s 6th Triennial General Meeting
The fact that there is a contest for the eight posts in the
committee shows that more members are interested and
want to be involved in the union,” said General Secretary
Teo Yock Ngee during his opening address at the AUPE
Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) Staff Branch’s 6th Triennia
l General Meeting (TGM) on 16 May 07.

Mr Teo shared his thoughts with some 40 members present
at the TGM on how AUPE had evolved over the past years to
align with NTUC’s policies and to stay relevant. He said that
to move forward, AUPE had organised a Business Planning
Seminar in January this year to reposition AUPE as a Group
to grow and develop for the long run. He touched on some
of the recommendations by participants pertaining to the
areas of Administration, Management & Welfare Services,
AUPE Multi-purpose Co-operative Membership and Benefits,
and Organisation Development and Corporate Services. He
informed that AUPE had set aside a dollar from members’
union subscriptions towards the Building and Development
Fund that would help to finance the development of the
union’s current building in the future.
Mr Teo next highlighted the 5 dragonboats that the union
had embarked on in support of the LM2011 vision. He hoped
that members would work together at all levels to implement
thework plans and strategies towards the
chosen dragonboats.
They are namely, the Gold Collar (Professional/Knowledge
workers), Silver Collar (Older Workers), Uth Movement (18 to 35 years), Singapore Tripartism Forum (STF) and Employment and Employability Institute (E2I).
Members present cast votes to elect 8 branch committee
members from the 13 nominations received. The key branch officials that comprised the Chairman, Secretary and Assistant Secretary were elected unopposed.
The annual Union Management Get-Together underscored the
solid and healthy relationship between the union and NYP management. Mr Lin Cheng Ton, Principal and Chief Executive
Officer of NYP was conferred the Medal of Commendation
Award by NTUC in 2006 for his role in building and nurturing a harmonious relationship between staff and union leaders in the school.

Union-Management
Get-together 2007
Nanyang Polytechnic Union-Management Get-Together 2007
For the seventh consecutive year, and also a significant year as it marks Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) 15 th Anniversary, the HR Department organized a Union-Management Get-Together on 19 January 2007. It was an adventure-oriented, full-day programme at the PA-Outward Bound School (OBS), East Coast Park Campsite, culminating in a barbecue dinner with Principal & CEO, Mr. Lin
Cheng Ton and senior management staff.
Dressed in suitable attires, all the staff were engaged in
challenging activities such as crawling in a “Tunnel Maze” in
almost pitch dark condition; performing a “Step of Faith” in the
flying fox section and walking across tight-rope in the “New Challenge Rope Course” at about three storeys above ground. Through the challenges, it brought out the best of Team-building spirit among union members and management staff. Some
had even overcome the phobia of height through the great encouragement of all staff.

The annual Union-Management Get-together event was held on Thurs 30 March 2006.
All union members and management’s staff came in comfortable casual attire. The bus left NYP at about 8:45am heading Jurong
Island. The special visit to the Chemical Process Technology
Centre (CPTC) in Jurong Island gives us a good understanding
of the contribution and role played by NYP in this strategic
national initiative.
After the tour round the island, lunch was served at the CPTC
and followed by a friendly combined bowling tournament at
Raffles Marina Club.

.................................................................................
It was an exciting morning to assemble at
Nanyang Polytechnic Carpark5 at 7.30am on 21 February 2003 for a group
of NYP staff comprising of 19 management and senior management staff,
8
union committee members and Deputy Secretary-General of AUPE, Ms Nor
Shyma to take a coach to Ponggol Marina, and followed by a ferry ride
to Pulau Ubin. This is the third year in a row Union-Management program
organised by the Human Resource Department to foster good and harmonious
relationship between management and union committee members.
We arrived safely at Ubin Lagoon Resort, everyone
in a cheerful
and relaxed mood to participate the programme dished out
by
the organiser. After enjoying a morning tea-break in the tranquil
and
serene atmosphere of Ubin cafe, the group was divided into
two teams to
attempt a Low Rope Course, called "Nitro Crossing"- The challenge
to succeed through innovation. The teams went through a process of brainstorming,
testing of the solution and
took out the challenge to move every
member of the team and
a pail of water from one end to another end
of a sandpit which is about 5 metres length by swinging on a rope. This
is to examine
our productivities through innovation and prudent risk-taking.
The next process was to make our own raft with limited
resources, and able to sail across the lagoon with every team members
on board the raft. One team had done it very well, while the other team
had failed miserably. They built the raft, put it on the water, sat on
it and paddled it for a while and the raft broke apart. Some screamed,
everyone in that team got wet but had a good laugh. The objective of this
activity is to learn that the quality of
the internal processes is ultimately
more important than the
results. The team had failed to tie quality knots
to secure the
drums and wooden sticks that make up the raft in order to
prevent them to drift apart with a heavy load of people sitting
on it.
In the afternoon, the teams encountered even more
difficult
and brain-racking mission, "Crocodile Pit - Bridging the
creativity gaps" and the other aptly named "Mission Impossible
- Innovation makes the impossible possible". The aim of "Crocodile
Pit" is to explore the innovative ways and barriers to creative thinking
and learn the danger of groupthink (tendency of teams converge too quickly)
which kills creativty and innovation; and "Mission Impossible"
is to highlight to the participants the innovative
ways to work smart
and the need to break rules (conventional thinking).
During the debrief session for these
afternoon activities, we gathered the following points:
- Spotted the technique of each other's team
- Different ideas of doing things for each team
- Good teamwork in both teams
- Lot of trust
- Need to experiment the ideas before doing
Here are some of the comments from the participants
at the
end of the activities:
- Ms Penny Goh (Director/Human Resource)
"No one person is better than the other as unity is
strength. Through
unity
and teamwork, we have maximize the resources to overcome the obstacles."
- Mr. Dennis Ang (Deputy Director/SIT):
"Somehow, the 2 teams seem to think alike and come
out with similar
strategy, and the only difference is in the implementation process.
This shows that "NYP can do
" spirit is inculcated into everyone
of us."
- Ms Tan Aik Ling (Section Head/SEGE):
"After the team had failed to build a raft to cross over
the lagoon,
we do not repeat the mistake of not thinking through the process thoroughly
for the next events."
- Mr. Yap Chu Yong (Asst Secretary NYP Staff Union Branch):
"Our team thought through quickly, tried it out also quickly and
take a risk, and then 'chong' (attack). Our team is 'The Entrepreneur
Team' while the other team is 'The Engineer Team'. "
- Mr.Lionel Teo (Asst Manager/SD):
"It is fun and challenging as we crack our head together,
the process
and the journey we took to overcome the obstacles."
