Message from the Principal

PCEO

Dear members of the NYP Staff Branch,

On 13 Mar 97, the NYP and AUPE signed its first Collective Agreement. Since then, I am pleased to note that efforts have been made on a continuing basis to further strengthen and improve the already cordial relationship between the Union and the Management on areas of common interest, through the Joint Industrial Relations Committee meetings as well as through informal discussions.

The Management strongly supports the need for the Union to reach out to its members. I am delighted that our Union has responded enthusiastically to tap on our existing Information Technology Infrastructure - the NYP Intranet - to publicise and update union members on the various activities and events organised from time to time by the AUPE, the NYP Staff Branch and the NTUC, as well as to disseminate news and update on developments. It is indeed timely, in this information technology era, to harness the best use of our IT systems to provide an effective and easy means for union members to access information practically and effectively at their finger tips.

I would like to congratulate the Union and its members on the launch of its Website on the NYP Intranet. We look forward to more cooperation between the Union and Management to forge a common vision and bond as we face new challenges in our commitment to Education for the Next Lap.

Sincerely,

Lin Cheng Ton
Principal & CEO

Message from the General Secretary, AUPE

Let me extend my heartiest congratulations to the committee and members of the Nanyang Polytechnic Staff Branch on the launch of their website.

Communicating with members is of utmost importance to the union. In this era of information technology it is only apt for branches to keep abreast with time and take advantage of new ways of reaching out to members. I am glad to note the management's pro-active move in rendering their support to the branch in their activities and also in according unrecorded leave to members to attend trade union courses and seminars.

In ensuring a happy and productive working environment for union members and staff of Nanyang Polytechnic, good industrial relations should prevail between the branch and management. This is reflected in the collective agreement with the formation of the joint industrial relations committee where work problems could be discussed and resolved. It is also an avenue of information sharing for union and management.

Let us continue to work together and foster the spirit of solidarity and co-operation among staff and management.

Paul Tan
General Secretary

Public Employees (AUPE)

Forward

Our Nanyang Polytechnic Staff Branch Committee was inaugurated in November 1993. The first Inaugural General Meeting of the Nanyang Polytechnic's Staff Branch was held at the French Singapore Institute Auditorium. The Nanyang Polytechnic's Staff Branch is 5 years old. We have come a long way since inception of the Branch in 1993.

The Nanyang Polytechnic's Staff Branch strives to achieve its objective to promote camaradie among its members through various social, recreational and educational actvities. For the past years, the Branch has done very well to cater to the varied needs of its members by organising many activities and gathering feedback into the needs and welfare of its members.

The establishment of a Joint Industrial Relations (IR) Committee between the Polytechnic and the Union will secure for the union members a greater share in and responsibility for and determines the observance of the conditions under which their duties are carried out.

We are the first Branch in AUPE history to launch our own Website and I am confident that with the establishment of our homepage, We could reach out to our members more effectively.

Lastly, I would also like to thank our Principal ,Mr Lin Cheng Ton for his constant support ,and access on its Website on the NYP Intranet.

Andrew Poh Leong Seng
Chairman
