NYP Assessment (Credit-Based) Regulations

Award of Diploma

Subject to the maximum period of candidature allowed, students must meet all the requirements of their course of study to be awarded the Diploma.

Diploma with Merit

The Diploma with Merit shall be awarded to students with consistent outstanding performance during their course of study. It shall generally be awarded to not more than the top 10% of graduands from each course.

To be eligible, students shall have passed each module of their course of study with at least a grade D in their first attempt. They shall also have achieved at least or better than the cut-off Grade Point Average (GPA) for their respective course of study. The cut-off GPA for each course will be based on the relative performance of the graduating cohort in each course and shall be determined by the Assessment Board.

Director's List

Students who have excelled during the semester shall be admitted to the Director’s List. Admission to the Director’s List shall generally be capped at not more than the top 15% of students from each stage of study of each course.

To be eligible, students must have a full study load for the semester. They must also have passed each module with at least a grade D in their first attempt and have achieved a Semestral Grade Point Average (SGPA) of not less than 3.0. For students who have been granted module exemption, their total advanced standing credits (from module exemption) must not be more than 20% of the full study load for the semester.

Candidature

Unless otherwise permitted, students are allowed a maximum period of twice the length of the normal duration of the course or one additional year, whichever is longer, to complete all the requirements of their course of study

Note: The maximum candidature allowed for students who have been granted credit transfer will be adjusted accordingly.

Eligibility for Module Credits / Examinations

To be eligible for module credits / examinations, students must have :-

(a) attended not less than 85% of module instruction time at lectures, tutorials, laboratories and workshops associated with that module;

(b) settled all payments due to the Polytechnic; and

(c) not committed any serious act of indiscipline.

Award of Module Credits

Full credit is earned when students:

(a) pass (with grade D or better for modules graded A to D, or grade P for modules graded Pass/Fail only) in the overall assessment, or

(b) obtain a grade SP in the supplementary assessment of a registered module.

Students, who have sufficient and acceptable evidence of relevant previous study and/or training to the satisfaction of the Assessment Board, may be granted exemption from and credit transfer for appropriate modules.

Withdrawal from Module

Student may, with valid and acceptable reasons, be allowed to withdraw from one or more registered modules in the semester. To do so, students are to complete a prescribed form (which is available at the School Admin Services Office) and submit it to the Programme Manager/Course Administrator/Course Coordinator by Week 8 Day 5 of the semester. Only applications that are substantiated with valid and acceptable reasons shall be considered by the polytechnic.

Students are advised to continue attending lessons and tests until an official approval of their application is received.

NO withdrawal from module will be allowed after Week 8 of the semester.

Supplementary Assessments

Students who obtain not less than 35% for the total assessment of a module shall be eligible for supplementary assessment, where provided, unless not permitted by the Assessment Board.

Students who obtain less than 35% for the total assessment of a module shall not be eligible for supplementary assessment, where provided, unless permitted by the Assessment Board.

Repeat of Modules

Students who fail any core module for the first time, after the supplementary assessment if provided, will be required to repeat the module. Students who fail any prescribed elective module, after the supplementary assessment if provided, may either repeat the same module or register for an alternative prescribed elective module approved for the course of study.Students who fail any complementary elective module, after the supplementary assessment if provided, may either repeat the same module or register for another complementary elective module.

Students may repeat a prescribed elective module or complementary elective module not more than two times.

Removal from Course of Study

Students shall be removed from the course if they:

(a) repeat and fail a core module, after the supplementary assessment if provided, and/or

(b) obtains a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 0.8 for two consecutive semesters.

Absence from Examinations

Students who are absent from any examination for which they are eligible shall be deemed to have sat and failed the examination unless the Assessment Board is satisfied that there are valid and acceptable reasons for their absence from the examination.

All documentary evidence, including medical certificates, in support of a student’s failure to take the examination must be submitted within the next 2 working days following the absence. If an online notification via myNYP Portal has also been made within the period, he/she is allowed up to the next 4 working days following the absence to submit the hard copy documentary evidence. Submissions must be made at the Student Services Centre or School Admin Services Office on prescribed forms. Medical certificates must be obtained from a medical practitioner registered with the Singapore Medical Council or a dental practitioner registered with the Singapore Dental Council, who ought not to be a family member.

Submission of a valid medical certificate does not mean that students will be allowed to appear for an alternative assessment. The decision to allow students to sit for an alternative assessment is at the absolute discretion of the Assessment Board. Unless otherwise permitted, students will have ONLY ONE attempt at passing the alternative assessment.

Appeal for Review of Assessment Results

Students who have failed any module in the semestral assessment may request a review of their results for that module within 3 working days from the day the assessment results are released by the Polytechnic.

Appeals must be made on prescribed forms available at the Student Services Centre. An administrative fee of S$26.75 (inclusive of GST) per module will be levied. The administrative fee will be refunded if the appeal is justified and approved.No appeal will be accepted for re-grading of a paper in which students have passed.

There will be no appeals for review of supplementary assessment results.
