NYP Symphony Orchestra

Established in 2003, the NYP Symphony Orchestra is the first polytechnic symphony orchestra in Singapore. Under its wing comes the Wind Orchestra (first formed in 1995) and the String Ensemble (formed in 2002). Today, it has a total of 188 members, made up mainly of full-time students. There are also dedicated alumni members in the Orchestra who continue to contribute faithfully to their alma mater.

On top of its annual SINFONIA concert, the Orchestra has received invitations to perform at the Esplanade, the Singapore Botanic Gardens Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage, Orchard Park and even the Istana Park! Music Exchange Tours were also organised in the past for the Wind Orchestra - to Hongkong in 1995 and Thailand in 1997. More recently, a 10-day trip was organised in 2004 for the Orchestra to participate in the 15th Australian International Music Festival where they performed at the Sydney Opera House.

2005 is going to be another landmark year as the NYP Symphony Orchestra makes its debut at the 15th World Music Contest in the Netherlands.

NYP Chinese Orchestra

The NYP Chinese Orchestra, formed in September 1996, offers students a more traditional and ethnic approach to music-making with expert coaching by experienced instructors to play the various instruments.

The Orchestra has performed at a number of occasions including the Singapore Arts
Festival: Festival Circuit '99. A highlight of the
Orchestra's calendar is their annual concert in February or March where the 50-strong student group plays to an appreciative and usually packed audience.

StageArts Drama & Theatre Club

The NYP StageARTS Drama & Theatre Club was established in 1994. Since its conception, the club has contributed much towards developing our students’ interest in acting, dancing, singing, theatre management, make-up & hair-do as well as costumes.

The Club has been actively staging performances within and also outside the Polytechnic; these have been well-received by students, staff and the public. Some of its well-acclaimed credits include Between Illusions (1996), Deceptions (1997), Life Murals (1999), Hotpants (2001), a Twisted Wish (2003) and The Piano Piece (2004).

Musical & Dance Group

Students can also pick up new music skills by learning to play the guitar with the Guitar Club or the harmonica with the Harmonica Ensemble. The Piano Ensemble aims to encourage the enjoyment of piano music and to bring students who have a common interest and talent to practice and perform together. Together with the Voice Ensemble, the guitar, harmonica and piano groups perform regularly at lunch-time concerts and at festive and major NYP events such as Open House, Graduation and Orientation.

For dance enthusiasts, the Foreign Bodies Dance Group is into hip-hop, funk and jazz dance choreography while the Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe welcomes all interested and game enough to learn the steps or rhythm involved in lion dancing.

Local Ethnic & International Cultural Groups

The Arts & Cultural Club comprises the local ethnic groups which cater to the multi-cultural needs of students in NYP. The Chinese, Indian and Malay Cultural Groups offer students the opportunity to interact with others or allow some to enhance similar cultural interests. Besides the local ethnic groups, the French (L'Hexagone French Club), German (Der Treff German Club), Japanese (Sakuran Japanese Cultural Club) and ASEAN Clubs offer students the opportunity to learn and appreciate a varied range of international culture, traditions and customs from these countries.
