NYP Notebook Ownership Scheme

OVERVIEW

What is it?

The NYP Notebook Scheme is an initiative to allow NYP to fully make use of IT for teaching, learning and research. It covers a rich source of IT-based teaching and learning resources.

The NYP Notebook Scheme is a scheme to allow full-time NYP students to use well-equipped notebook computers to enable them to learn, interact and access real world resources at any time and in any place.

Why is this scheme necessary?

The driving force behind the need of universal access to information may be found in:

  • Increasing dynamism in the nature of knowledge that students must learn.
  • Changes in educational paradigms
  • A desire for improved communications
  • The rapid pace of technological changes
  • The changing nature of the student population

Benefits:

  • Enhanced student/faculty communications
  • Access to the world of knowledge
  • Self-directed learning
  • Availability of resources
  • As an educational enhancement
  • More online student services
  • Enhanced career marketability through improved IT proficiency

Which students are involved in this scheme?

This scheme will involve ONLY new Year One students for the Academic Year 2009/2010.

Is it compulsory?

No. However, NEW Year One students are strongly encouraged to participate in this scheme.

How does this scheme work?

This scheme encourages you to own a notebook computer to enable you to login and access the NYP wireless network resources.

Are there any advantages being on this scheme?

With a notebook, you will not have to queue for PCs in the computer labs and you can surf and access Internet resources at any time and any place using the wireless hotspots located all over the campus. Since the notebook belongs to you, you can use it as an education, communication and entertainment tool.

Eventually, more and more study materials will be made online and it will become essential that you have immediate access to a computer to access your courses, tutorials and assignments electronically.

What happens if I already have a notebook or intend to purchase my own?

You can still participate in this project.

What about the desktop PCs in the student computer labs?

The student computer labs will still remain. However, if you own a notebook, you will not have to queue for PCs and will have the flexibility to install your own software, surf the Internet, etc.

I have a desktop PC at home. Do I have to participate?

We strongly recommend that you seriously consider getting a notebook for use on campus to access the learning materials.

SERVICE and SUPPORT

I purchased the notebook from the selected NYP appointed vendors and it is not working.

A comprehensive support infrastructure has been set up to assist students in the use of their notebook computers in the campus environment.

Students can approach the relevant School IT Support Staff and the Vendor Service Centres. At the Vendor Service Centres, the vendors will fix your notebook. But do backup your data regularly.

Please refer to the tables at the end of the page for contacts on notebook hardware-related and software-related issues.

Will I get support and service from NYP if I have my own notebook or purchased it from another vendor?

No hardware service will be given. You need to go back to your own vendor service centre.

However, the School's IT Support Staff will try to help you if you have a software problem. Priority, however,  will be given to notebooks purchased from the NYP notebook tender.

What sort of hardware service is covered?

If your hard disk is corrupted, no data recovery is provided. (Do backup your data.)

Will the notebook warranty cover me after I graduate?

After you graduate, you can bring it to the respective vendor service centre.

My notebook is corrupted, what should I do?

There are 2 ways to resolve this problem ( only apply to notebooks purchased from NYP notebook tender ) :

Either

  • Approach your respective School helpdesk (if available) for assistance.

OR

  • Contact the respective vendors whom you have purchased the notebook to re-clone the machine.
Do note that the 1st re-clone is free but there will be charges for subsequent re-clones.
Also take note that a re-clone would mean a reformat of your hard disk, so do remember to make a backup of your files before sending for a re-clone.
Charges (before GST) for the re-clone by the various vendors are as follows:

Acer - $50
AsiaPac Distribution Pte Ltd - $50
Sapura (MacBook) - $150

Will my tuition fees be increased because of the NYP Notebook Ownership Scheme?

No.

Do I have to take up insurance?

You are strongly encouraged to take up insurance for the notebook against fire, theft and accidental damage.

You can find information on insurance companies that will insure your notebook on http://www.ins-solutions.com.sg

Why the need for notebook insurance?

Should you lose or damage your notebook:

  • Replacing your lost notebook is a burden to you and your parents.

  • Ultimately you are paying a notebook for the price of two.

  • NYP will not extend a 2nd loan to you for the purchase of another notebook.

  • Isn't it inconvenient for you to complete your assignment?

How can the notebook insurance benefit me?

The insurance company will indemnify all losses or damages to the Notebook in accordance to the terms, limits and conditions of the policy.
