Sport commands considerable international
prominence and appeal. In Singapore,
the government has similarly recognised
the full potential and economic
significance of elite sport, sporting
culture and sports business to
gear itself to be the focal city
in Asia for the business of sports.
According to a recent global study
cited by the Singapore Sports
Council, the booming sports market
in the Asia Pacific region is
expected to flourish up to an
estimated total value of over
$17 billion by 2010. In this context,
sport and wellness organisations
have made it clear that they require
qualified managers and practitioners
to administer and promote their
affairs and capitalise on the
lucrative sports scene.
Not only will tomorrow's sport
managers and executives be sports
enthusiasts, they will need to
be individuals with competent
knowledge and professional acumen
in business management, governance
and service quality. This orientation
is particularly important given
the focus on transparency and
financial accountability in the
public sector, global expansion
and spirited competition in the
commercial world, and the emergent
interdependence and assertiveness
of practitioners in the voluntary
corps.
The Diploma in Sport & Wellness
Management was devised to reflect
the increasing requirements for
a greater business orientation
in the sport and leisure industry.
The course provides students with
a broad-based knowledge of business
management priorities that is
framed by specialised sport and
wellness modules. The specialised
knowledge encompasses wide-ranging
topics such as country club and
facility management, workplace
health promotion, personal fitness
leadership and leisure industries.
Unique to NYP is the Teaching
Enterprise Project (TEP) training
whereby students gain practical
hands-on learning and exposure
in various management and operational
business aspects, including the
attachment in the "Body Watch",
a fitness centre in NYP, operated
by students and staff from the
School of Business Management.
Through group work, projects and
execution of real-life events,
students get to apply their technical
knowledge while developing capabilities
in sport management skills. An
11-week industry attachment complements
the 6-month TEP stint.
