Prospect in Chemical & Life Sciences

Singapore is committed to build the Chemical & Life Sciences industry as the 4th key pillar of its economy. The EDB aims to attract 15 world-class Life Sciences companies to Singapore by 2010, as well as enable Singapore to be a regional centre for clinical trials & drug development. The vision is for Singapore to have a competitive base for state-of-the-art, high value-added pharmaceutical activities.

The education and training of a relevant skilled workforce is thus vital to Singapore's push into the Life Sciences.

The Singapore government continues to invest substantially in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. As Singapore moves on to be a global chemical hub, these sectors will continue to grow in depth and breadth across both the manufacturing and service areas.

Jurong Island is a cost-competitive location for world-scale petrochemical plants. Today, Jurong Island is home to over 88 leading petroleum, petrochemical, specialty chemical and supporting companies with more than S$24 billion in fixed assets investment on Jurong Island. By 2010, Jurong Island will be home to 150 petrochemicals, specialty chemicals and petroleum companies with S$40 billion worth of investments.

The manufacturing output of the Biomedical Sciences industry reached S$18 billion and employment crossed the 10,000 mark in 2005. With pharmaceutical sales in Asia forecasted to reach US$30 billion by 2006, leading pharmaceutical companies will continue to choose Singapore as a preferred location to carry out their manufacturing, clinical development and R&D activities.

School of Chemical & Life Sciences is well positioned to educate and develop trained professionals to meet the increasing demands of the Life Sciences as well as the Chemical & Pharmaceutical industries. We have a conducive learning environment, excellent academic support infrastructure and unique pedagogies, such as the "Teaching Factory" and the "Borderless School" concepts, to equip students with the required skill-set for fruitful careers in the Life Sciences and Chemical & Pharmaceutical manufacturing industries
