Synopsis Of Year 2 Modules

EGF201
Engineering Mathematics 2A
[60 hours]

This module is an extension of first year Engineering Maths, and is designed to equip students with an adequate knowledge of engineering mathematics to solve engineering problems encountered in the course and in their future work. The emphasis of the topics is on applications and problem solving. Topics include partial differentiation, first and second order differential equations, Laplace transform and their applications.

EGF202
Aeronautical Science
[60 hours]

This module introduces the fundamentals of aircraft stability and control and the related aspects of flying and handling qualities assessment. To enable the students to acquire a level of understanding sufficient to enable them to manipulate aircraft data, solve the equations of motion and correctly interpret the solutions.

EGF203
Engineering Mechanics 2
[60 hours]

This module builds on the foundation of Engineering Mechanics 1 and covers more practical and complex mechanical analysis. It is to provide the students with the various concepts of solid mechanics and dynamic behaviour of physical body in motion. Students should be able to appreciate, analyse and utilise their knowledge to solve real-life problems related to engineering applications upon completion of this module.

EGF204
Aero-Structures & Systems
[60 hours]

This module introduces the fundamental knowledge of aircraft structure and evolution of structural checking criteria, as well as the various system used in a commercial aircraft. Topics covered include structural design concepts, wing structure, aircraft structure, load factors of translation acceleration, factors of safety, design of aerospace components and systems, variation in structural strength, fatigue and shear flow calculation. Other topics include Instrument / Avionic, Fire protection, Flight control, Ice and Rain Protection system will also be introduced.

EGF205
Computer Aided Manufacturing/ Engineering
[60 hours]

This module introduces Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software applications. Students will be taught manual CNC part programming, and the generation of tool paths for complex geometries using a CAM software package.

EGF206
Quality Process Management
[30 hours]

This module provides students with knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics and how statistics could be used to control processes in product manufacturing. Topics include basic statistics, probability distributions, point estimation, interval estimation, sampling theory, control charts, acceptance sampling plans and process capability studies. Students will have hands-on experience with digital instruments, digital processors, statistical process control software. The module also introduces students to nano-metrology, six-sigma and lean manufacturing.

EGF207
Engineering Mathematics 2C
[60 hours]

This is a continuation of Engineering Mathematics 1. Topics covered include Fourier Series, permutation, combination, probability and probability distributions.

EGF208
Mechanical Design
[60 hours]

This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts and considerations for mechanical design. It provides them with the necessary knowledge that is pertinent to basic mechanical systems design. Students will be tasked to design simple mechanical systems using suitably designed/selected machine elements and engineering components from commercial catalogues. Topics covered include engineering design process, stress analysis, beam deflection, design for static strength, design for fatigue strength, jig and fixture design, cams, and selection and application of machine elements.

EGF209
Thermofluids
[60 hours]

The module aims to introduce the fundamentals of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. In the topics of thermodynamics and heat transfer, the properties of pure substances and ideal gases, laws of thermodynamics and processes of heat transfer are introduced. In the topics of fluid mechanics, the properties of fluids, the concepts and basic equations of fluid static’s and fluid flow are covered. Lab experiments will be used reinforce the basic concepts.

EGF210
Metrology & Quality Control
[60 hours]

This module will provide students with the fundamental concepts for the subject. Students will learn the parameters of dimensional measurement through applying techniques learnt and hands-on practice on some of the specialised instruments. By the end of the course, students should gain a sound understanding of good measurement practices.

EGF211
Aircraft Propulsion System
[60 hours]

This module covers theory of turboprop, turbojet, multi-spoon fanjet, variable cycle engines and by pass air breathing propulsion systems. Theory of inlets, compressors, burners and turbines will be introduced. Topics covered also includes engine performance and monitoring, component matching, cooling, fuel system, engine oil and breathing systems, test methods and correction and thrust vector control methods.

EGF212
Aviation Practices & Legislation
[30 hours]

This module covers the concepts and understanding of the human factors that affect the performance in aviation and aircraft maintenance, as well as the reduction of human errors in maintenance task and work environment. It also covers the main aviation regulations and airworthiness requirements governing the aerospace industry and their applications. The roles and responsibilities of regulatory agencies (eg CAAS, FAA) will also be covered.

General Studies
[30 hours]

This module provides an understanding of business and develops entrepreneurial skills. Students study non-engineering subjects such as economics, cost accounting, marketing and foreign languages.
