Synopsis Of Year 1 Modules
EG1001
Engineering Mathematics 1A/1B
[60 hours]
Provides the students with the essential knowledge and analytical skills in mathematics for solving engineering problems. Topics covered include basic trigonometry, introduction to differentiation and integration, vector and series.
EG1008
Engineering Mathematics 1A/1C
[60 hours]
Provides the students with the essential knowledge and analytical skills in mathematics for solving engineering problems. Topics covered include trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions, differentiation and integration.
EG1201
Engineering Drawing/CADD
[75 hours]
The module covers the knowledge & practical skills of preparing and interpreting engineering drawings. Topics that elaborate the drawing standards and conventions of orthographic projection, sectional views, assembly drawing, dimensioning, pictorial drawing, etc., are included to equip the students with the necessary skills in communicating ideas and concepts through technical drawings.
EG1024
Materials Technology [45 hours]
This module aims to provide the students with the intrinsic knowledge of the physical and mechanical properties of engineering materials, such as steel, aluminium, copper, plastics, composite materials, etc. With this knowledge, the students will be able to select the most appropriate materials for use in engineering applications. A study of various material treatment processes and their industrial applications is also incorporated in the module. It provides the students with a practical understanding of how these processes can be used to alter the properties of materials to meet application requirements. The topics covered include fundamentals of heat treatment, surface hardening processes, and destructive testing.
EG1216
Communication Skills [60 hours]
This module aims at enabling students to communicate effectively and accurately in an engineering academic environment. It covers areas in methods of study, reading, listening, technical writing and oral presentation. It includes topics such as communication process, laboratory report writing, note taking, reading comprehension, oral presentation skills, interview skills and writing of job application letters, memos, proposals, technical report and business letters.
EG1074
Electrical Principles & Circuits
[75 hours]
This module covers various aspects of basic electrical and electronics principles such as electrical circuits, machines, measurements, electronic devices and instrumentation. It also provides an understanding of the fundamentals of digital electronics. Topics include logic circuit, analog/digital signal converters and microprocessor.
EG1213
Semestral Project 1 [60 hours]
Covers a series of structured project assignments in which students are expected to apply techniques/skills learned into actual applications. Specialised themes and problems are presented where students in teams are expected to apply what they have learnt in a progressive manner. Lecturers and instructors shall provide close supervision to reinforce learning, and to encourage creativity in problem-solving. Students shall also practise their communication ability in presenting and explaining their concept to the target audience. A high degree of freedom is provided to promote innovativeness.
EG1212
Manufacturing Technology [75 hours]
This module introduces to students the common manufacturing processes and production systems in the industry. The operating principles, applications and economical aspects of the industrial manufacturing processes will be described. It also includes the classification of production systems, concepts of manufacturing resource planning, JIT and group technology, and an introduction to computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The practical sessions introduce the students with operation of various basic machines (such as milling and turning), measuring techniques and bench fitting and assembly.
EG1211
Engineering Mechanics 1 [75 hours]
This module is designed to provide first-year students with the fundamentals of engineering mechanics and to enable them to analyse and solve problems related to engineering design applications. The topics covered include concepts and principles of mechanics, Newton's 3 fundamental laws, statics of rigid bodies in 2-D, stress and strain, moment of inertia of areas and masses, beams, bending moments and shear forces, torsion of circular sectioned shafts, friction, dynamics, work, energy and power.
EG1215
Analogue & Digital Electronics [60 hours]
Fundamental of analogue and digital electronics will be introduced. This module provides the essential knowledge of the characteristic of electronics components and devices such as PN junction, transistors and operational amplifier. Logic functions and circuits for analysis, design and trouble-shooting will be covered with emphasis on theory and practical.
EG1088
Computer Programming [75 hours]
This module comprises two parts. The first part gives an overview of the computer and its applications, with focus on personal computers. It includes a section on how to develop algorithms and drawing flowcharts. The second part of the module covers computer programming using C language. The emphasis is on mastering of basic programming skills. The module has a practical orientation with ample hands-on practice.
EG1217
Semestral Project 2 [60 hours]
Structured along the same approach for the Semestral Project series, this module aims at exploring and developing student creativity and innovation. Key coverage includes problem-solving skill, teamwork, manufacturing processes, etc. Specialised themes shall be given where students are expected to complete and present their solutions through team working.
