Background
The Embedded Technology Centre (ETC) is a specialist centre in the School of Engineering of Nanyang Polytechnic. The Centre focuses on the advancement and applications of embedded technologies for the development of innovative solutions. Embedded technology provides the intelligence of an electronics product; from smart home appliances, game console, HDTV set-top boxes to satellite navigation system. Embedded technologies have enabled and helped the whole electronics industry to grow at a phenomenon rate.
The key thrusts of the Centre are:
- Spearheading R&D development in embedded technologies and applications
- Provision of specialist development training programmes
- Support to industries on embedded product/application development & training

Project Information
The Centre actively seeks collaboration with its industry partners and has been engaged in numerous projects over the years. An example of a recent project is the development of a portable heart diagnostic device.
Portable Heart Diagnostic Device
Developed in conjunction with industry partner, the smart portable heart
diagnostic device performs real-time heart sound monitoring and early
diagnosis. It is capable of detecting heart defects such as abnormal blood
flow, splits heart sounds, and other heart defects. This light-weight,
highly compact smart device can be used by medical personnel for in-patient
clinical and field diagnosis.
Advanced Radio Transceiver Platform
A collaboration effort with industry partner to design and develop an advanced radio transceiver platform for ultra high data rate transmission. This portable platform is designed with a high performance RISC-based processor and a real-time operating system that delivers high throughput for advanced communication applications.
