I was inspired to join Healthcare industry by my parents and the good work they do. My three-day stay at a hospital when i was 16 convinced me to pick Nursing as my career choice. I observed, first hand, how the nurses worked, and I thought 'This is such an important job, and is something that I could definitely do'.
As a young inexperienced student, it was, of course, very challenging at my first few attachments in a hospital setting. l have to deal with demanding patients and angry relatives. I remembered asking myself if I made the right choice, whenever I stepped into a ward. I overcome these early jitters as I gained more experience and become more adept at caring for patients and earning their trust.
It was really good to be pushed out of my comfort zone. I learnt to take the time to talk to my patients and really develop my people skills. Where before I would do a task in five minutes, now I would take a little longer, so I can spend some time talking to the patient and answeing his or her questions.
The Emergency Department offers a lot of learning opportunities and is really the best place to be for a junior nurse like me. I will work to gain more experience as a staff nurse before pursuing a degree in nursing.

Cai Shuqi
Diploma in Occupational Therapy
Class of 2010
Tay Eng Soon Award
Ministry of Health Gold Medal |
I wanted to work in a profession that I could do something meaningful, where I could make a difference in people's lives. I wanted to enjoy my work, to meet and form relationships with people and have a positive influence in their lives.
While waiting for my 'A' level results, I took the initiative to write to Singapore General Hospital (SGH), asking to observe its healthcare professionals at work. I spent a whole day at SGH and saw that there was a lot of interaction and rapport between the occupational therapist and her clients. I could also see how interesting it would be to work with different clients, as each would come with a different life story. I soon realised that this was what I was looking for.
My advice to my juniors - "We start out having great expectations - we want to help so many people and change the world. But as you gained experience through your attachments, you will learn that you face many limitations. Don't be disillusioned. Always stay true to why you chose this profession in the first place and remember to always keep the 'heart' for your clients".

Diploma in Dental Hygiene & Therapy
Class of 2010 |
I have not seriously considered practising dentistry and being part of a dental team until the later part of my teen years. Having chanced upon NYP's Dental Hygiene & Therapy course during my 'O'-Levels, I set my mind to enter a Polytechnic, and I have never regretted that decision.
The prestige and honour of being a dental hygienist/therapist keeps me passionate about my job. We don't just provide dental services, but we also make our patients feel good about their teeth. People always say 'Live your dream and love your job'. Many have spent a lifetime in search of their dream job. I'm lucky to have found mine.

My three years in the Diagnostic Radiography course have been extremely colourful, vibrant and enriching.
I had one of the most wonderful bunch of friends who have helped me through challenging times, while making school life very interesting.
NYP offers a sheer myriad of opportunities for the students. I have been incredibly blessed to have been given the chance to go on overseas study visits, clinical attachments in London, as well as regional debating experiences. These trips have given me plenty of exposure, and were instrumental in inculcating independence and resourcefulness.
I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Applied Science (Diagnostic Radiography) at the University of Sydney on a Singhealth Allied Health Sciences Scholarship. Upon my return, I definitely hope to contribute to society as a Radiographer at KK Hospital. My NYP education has put me in good stead to do so.

Diploma in Radiation Therapy
Class of 2009 |
Choosing to study in NYP was a big turning point in my life. As a radiation therapy student, my perspective of life has changed for the better as I came into contact with cancer patients on a daily basis during my clinical attachments. This has made me cherish my family members and loved ones even more. In addition, there is a sense of satisfaction from knowing that you are helping in a patient's battle with the disease. NYP has certainly nurtured me into a compassionate healthcare worker who is equipped with the professional knowledge and skills to aid patient on the road to recovery.

39th WorldSkills Competition in Shizuoka, Japan, Gold Medal |
Looking back, my three years at NYP have flown by really fast. My time here has helped me grow both personally and professionally, and provided me with a strong theoretical and clinical foundation in Nursing.
NYP has given me a conducive setting for learning, thanks to its knowledgable lecturers and the supportive environment. I was also given the opportunity to take part in the WorldSkills Competition 2007, held in Japan. In preparation for the competition, I went for attachments in Japan and Finland to observe the nursing care provided by their local nurses. These eye-opening experiences have been beneficial. They have widened my perspectives of the nursing profession, and improved my ability to deliver care to my patients.
My wonderful classmates have also brought much joy in my campus life. The bonds between us were strengthened as we came together to discuss projects and develop creative role plays for our presentations. Through other activities like the Mentorship Training programme and Polytechnic Forum, I have gained further knowledge beyond books, and acquired skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.

Karen Tan Hsien Ling
Diploma in Nursing
Class of 2004
MOH Health Science Scholarship |
| A Registered Nurse, Karen left behind a lucrative career as a Financial Futures Trader to pursue her childhood dream, of becoming a Nurse |
After working as a Financial Futures Trader for many years, I have decided to re-evaluate my career options after hearing news of retrenchment at the Singapore Exchange. I took it as a chance to explore what else I could do. Since young, I have been drawn to help people who are less fortunate than I am, as I came from a well-sheltered family. In the end, I decided to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a nurse.
I enjoyed life as a student again at Nanyang Polytechnic. I was part of the community outreach club that provided free health screening and other community activities for elderly persons in the neighbourhood. I was also class leader and mentor to new students.
I live by my motto which is to 'live life with passion and compassion'. These 2 qualities will see you far. There are many opportunities to excel in nursing. If you care for persons, value relationships, are disciplined and have an eye for detail, you will do well.

Dr Clement Yan
Diploma in Physiotherapy
Class of 1999
Principal Physiotherapist
Department of Physiotherapy, Singapore General Hospital
|
I had already decided to pursue a career in healthcare during my first year of junior college, but I only decided that physiotherapy was a good fit for me after visiting an open house event at NYP back in 1995. I was fortunate to receive a sponsorship/bursary award from Changi General Hospital which helped me through the Diploma program financially. And the rest, as people always say, is history.
I've practised in the acute care setting for almost ten years in the context of both physiotherapy and respiratory therapy in Singapore and the USA. I graduated from NYP in 1999, and later completed my degree in physiotherapy with the University of Sydney. After working three years at Changi General Hospital, I went to the USA to pursue a degree in respiratory therapy at SUNY Upstate Medical University. I then completed a clinical doctoral degree in physical therapy from Creighton University in the USA. I am a licensed physical therapist and registered respiratory therapist in the USA, both credentials have allowed me to work and gain invaluable clinical experiences.
The three years at NYP have been intense but fun. You'll learn plenty, and enjoy the camaraderie with your classmates and experienced lecturers/instructors. The physiotherapy curriculum is developed to fit both the context of Singapore and the global healthcare settings. The foundation you'll build in these three years will carry you far, as it did for me. With passion and compassion, you'll find a career in healthcare, especially in physiotherapy, extremely rewarding and fulfilling.
