Introduction
Singapore is a leading international financial centre and the largest trading centre for emerging-market currencies in Asia. It is also home to over 600 local and multinational financial institutions including American Express, Barclays, Citibank, DBS, Great Eastern Life, Manulife, OCBC, Standard Chartered Bank and UOB. The banking and financial sector is fast emerging as a key driving force in the economy, as Singapore establishes itself as a financial hub in the region.
As financial services are information and technology intensive, IT plays a key role in shaping the way banks and financial institutions transform their businesses with good governance and infuse their operating models with new functions. This is done to compete more effectively in the global marketplace. The Diploma in Financial Informatics trains professionals for the vibrant and fast-growing banking and financial industry with an integrated and well-balanced approach which marries expertise in both IT and Financial Services. Students will learn to define business requirements in financial services, leverage the innovative use of IT and translate them into implementable solutions. With these capabilities, they will make significant contributions to the competitiveness and efficient operations of the dynamic financial industry.
The students will learn a wide spectrum of IT technologies and business domain knowledge relevant to the financial services industry. Develop the capability to integrate these two areas of expertise and design innovative IT systems and solutions, with the following focus areas:
- Accounting & Finance
- Financial Products and Services
- Internet & E-Banking Technology
- Business Intelligence & Enterprise Solutions
Through participation in hands-on projects and case studies, students acquire good understanding of how banks and financial institutions operate and how IT is innovatively harnessed to create new services. The flexibility of the course allows students to pursue specialisation in either Banking & Financial Services or Banking & Financial Applications to increase their attractiveness to prospective employers in the financial services industry
