Excellence in Public Service Award 2017 winners Lily Soh (Left) and Leow Zhen Zhen.

Our lecturers Lily Soh and Leow Zhen Zhen did us proud by clinching the Excellence in Public Service Awards last week.

Lily, a Manager from the School of Engineering, and Zhen Zhen, Assistant Manager from School of Information Technology, are two of 15 winners from the Ministry of Education (MOE) to receive the coveted awards. Lily received the PS21 Distinguished Star Service (DSS) Award and Zhen Zhen the PS21 Star Service Award. In fact, Lily is one of only three DSS Award recipients from MOE and its statutory boards.

Lily joined NYP in 1995. It was the passion to teach and develop young minds that drew her to this job. Now, 22 years later, the passion has not diminished. In fact, it has grown stronger year after year. She feels most accomplished when her students graduate and come forward to thank her for making a difference in their lives.

She has initiated a student-centric Active Learning Programme to engage and motivate mixed-ability generation-Y students in the study of engineering mathematics. Under her leadership, the Engineering Mathematics and Science Group has transformed into a motivated, creative and energetic educational team. She constantly encourages her team to experiment on different teaching and learning pedagogies to benefit our students.

Zhen Zhen joined NYP ten years ago as a software developer right after graduating from the National University of Singapore. At that point of time, she didn't think of teaching as a long term career. However, she found herself enjoying what she did and eventually became a lecturer. Nurturing students for local and international IT competitions and watching them doing their best brings a great deal of satisfaction to Zhen Zhen. The same goes when she see her former students graduate and excel in their careers.

Zhen Zhen consistently strives for excellence in everything that she does, from educating and inspiring students to industry projects and competitions. She actively engages the industry to bring in real projects for students. This gives NYP students the critical hands-on skills, working on real, deployable industry projects in preparation for their jobs and careers in the IT sector. Her students are highly motivated and inspired when they see their creations in platforms like the Apple and Google app stores.

Our heartiest congratulations to Lily and Zhen Zhen.
