Giving Back, The Healthy Way

Our student nurses were professional in carrying out their duties during the health screening.

For the first time, SHS students worked alongside professionals from the National Dental Centre, the Singapore National Eye Centre, as well as NUS' Medicine, Dentistry and Social Work undergrads, to provide comprehensive health screening for the elderly and lower-income residents in Kampong Glam.

More than 70 of our student nurses participated in the exercise held between Oct 07 and 08 - which benefited about 450 residents. It provided many opportunities for inter-professional learning as the scope of screening included dementia screening, basic eye and dental check-ups, as well as social and medical history taking. Derek Ng, second year nursing student, shared: "It was an eye-opener for me to work with multidisciplinary teams with many different skillsets. It was a meaningful way to work together to provide the best care for the lower-income residents. "
