During his final year, Hugo also had the opportunity to complete a three-month internship at the IBM Center of Advanced Studies in Canada, where he was involved in creating a dynamic AI chatbot for workflows and earned him a distinction.

Lye Jia Jun Diploma in Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics

In 2019, Jia Jun became the first Google Developer Student Club (DSC) Lead from a polytechnic when the Programme was launched in Singapore. Google selects one DSC Lead per school from universities around the world, and only seven schools in Singapore were involved in the programme - with NYP being the only polytechnic. “I did not expect to be selected because I thought the programme was targeted at university students.” As president of NYP’s DSC, Jia Jun and his fellow club members organised programming workshops to help freshmen cope better with home-based learning, which kicked in during the COVID-19 Circuit Breaker in 2020.

Liong Wen Xuan, Yong Kai Qi and Milton Sim Diplomas in Infocomm & Security, Information Technology and Cyber Security & Forensics respectively Diploma in Cyber Security & Forensics (Now known as Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics)

These three SIT students represented Singapore, and faced stiff competition from top students around the world to bag the Medallion of Excellence at WorldSkills Kazan 2019 in Russia. Wen Xuan picked up his win in the IT Network Systems Administration skills area; Kai Qi, the IT Software Solutions for Business skills area; and Milton, the Cloud Computing skills area. The trio spent two years at NYP preparing for this event, dedicating their school holidays and after-school hours to learning from their coaches. “The competition was a learning experience because there were industry experts ready to impart their knowledge,” says Kai Qi. “The experience gave us the chance to showcase our talent, and exchange ideas with others from around the world,” adds Wen Xuan.

Leow Zhen Xiong Diploma in Business Intelligence & Analytics

Zhen Xiong enjoyed a six-month internship at Procter and Gamble (P&G) where his outstanding work was recognised with P&G's Internship Award in the Technical Rigor category. Following the successful stint, he was offered a full-time job with the company. “My NYP course had equipped me with a solid foundation in subject areas across almost all IT sectors. So, even though I specialised in analytics, I was able to use my knowledge in programming and database management when my internship required it.”

Isaiah Wong Hao Jie Diploma in Information Technology

What started out as a passion has propelled Isaiah to success. After graduating from the Normal (Academic) stream in secondary school, he pursued a diploma in IT at NYP, where he was given the opportunity to go on an attachment at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. There, he was immersed in the field of cybersecurity. “It wasn’t my specialisation, but I was able to quickly adapt and learn the ropes due to my training at NYP. I appreciate the opportunity because I gained a large breadth of IT skills and knowledge. The overseas attachment allowed me to venture out of my comfort zone and gain practical skills.”

Tan Kee Hock Diploma in Information Security (Now known as Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics)

Kee Hock never thought he would become a hacker when he decided to study IT at SIT. After graduation, he furthered his studies at Singapore Management University's School of Information Systems, where he topped his cohort, and was awarded the prestigious DBS Bank School Valedictorian Award. At work, he is part of a group of professional “white hat” hackers who help government agencies identify gaps in their cyber-defences — by employing techniques and tools that malicious attackers use in real incidents. “I am constantly learning new skills and upgrading my competencies in other areas while on the job. My research contributes to my team’s effort in finding innovative ways to strengthen our country’s cybersecurity defences.”
