| Dear
Colleagues
Who can forget Singapore's first Formula One night race last month? NYP certainly added excitement to Singaporeans' racing craze with our very own car simulation game from the School of Interactive & Digital Media. Check out what their latest night scene looks like. In addition, NYP graduate Daniel Charles was also very much part of the F1 scene, in charge of corporate entertainment.
Other exciting developments include the start of the school term for a pioneer batch of Stirling University students and a brand new portal for NYP students. And in terms of awards won, NYP has made an impact at WorldSkills Singapore and the National Video Competition. Happy reading!

Playing Our Part in F1
Besides winning the Imagine Cup, NYP students have also proven their mettle in various competitions. Here’s a list of some recent wins:
| |
Do you know that NYP has – in our own way – contributed to the excitement of Singapore’s first F1?
As you may know, the School of Interactive & Digital Media (SIDM) partnered Singapore Grand Prix to create a car simulation game with a 3D version of the Marina Bay track. The simulation game, known as the Marina Bay Street Circuit, was completed before the F1 race began here on September 26th. This game dazzles with its realistic night scenes of the F1 track. It has been showcased at Games Convention Asia in September 2008, and is currently exhibited at the Science Centre.
Said Ng Kian Bee, Deputy Director/Games & Digital Entertainment, "Through this project, students and staff get to develop a game that mimics the real driving experience of a F1 race car. Combining the simulator hardware and detailed creative content, the team has achieved a quality applauded by many as the benchmark for a driving simulation game." |

Daniel, who runs two motorsports business, was thrilled to be involved in Singapore's first F1 event.

Our Skills Champs

NYP students have proven their skills prowess during the recent WorldSkills Singapore (WSS) competition - reaping 5 Golds, 5 Silvers and 4 Bronzes.
The competitors were among 160 youths who took part in the finals of this biennial competition from 16-18 October 2008. Held for the eighth time, the WSS series aims to recognise the talents of young, skilful Singaporeans and raise the standards of excellence in technical skills.
NYP’s 5 gold medallists were from these competition areas: Graphic Design Technology, IT – PC & Network Support, Mechanical Engineering Drawing & Design CADD, Mechatronics and Mobile Robotics. Gold medallists stand a good chance to represent Singapore at the prestigious 40th WorldSkills Competition to be held in Calgary, Canada, in 2009.
Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering students Eugene Loh and Lau Chin Boon won gold medals in Mechatronics, a team event. The duo have been training hard for the past three years and attributed their success to a comprehensive training programme NYP has given them. |

“What also helped was that we worked very well as a team. Chin Boon specialised in the programming aspects of the competition whereas I looked into the mechanical and electronics engineering aspects,” said Eugene, who is quietly confident they will continue to do well when they represent Singapore in this competition area next year. |

A Sterling Start for 54 Pioneer Students
 |
 |
 |
| We are the Pioneers! The first batch of Stirling students with NYP and Stirling staff. |
A new beginning...these students will be taught by our SBM staff and faculty from Stirling University. |
NYP’s first-ever degree programme got off to a good start in September 2008, with a pioneer batch of 54 students.
The BA (Hons) in Retail Marketing is NYP’s joint collaboration with Stirling University, under the Poly-Foreign Specialised Institutes (FSI) initiative. The new programme is jointly taught by the retail and marketing team at NYP’s School of Business Management and faculty from Stirling University. Through this collaboration, students will have an opportunity to complete part of their studies at the Stirling University campus in the UK. Similarly, students from the Stirling campus can choose to complete part of their degree at NYP. |

A Magical Experience
 |

Sandy Chua, who would recommend this programme to other students, summed up the feelings of the group, “This programme allowed me to learn from the world’s greatest service provider. I'm glad that I made the decision to come over (to Orlando). With this attachment, I have met so many people from all over the world, experienced the diverse workplace, and different style of working."
SBM will continue to offer this Disney attachment programme for its final-year Hospitality & Resort Management students. |

"Everyone Makes a Hero"
Every single Singaporean matters, and each one has play his or her part in nation building. That is the theme of the video by four Digital Media Design students Grace Choo, Meng Zhiqun, Toon Pei Ling and Ng Kun Yu. The students recently won third prize in the ITE & Polytechnic category of the National Video Competition organised by National Heritage Board (NHB) and Ministry of Education (MOE). The theme for this year’s competition is "Celebrating Singapore's Heroes".
“We came up with the tagline “Everyone makes a Hero”. We felt that everyone has his own special and unique way of serving the country, and that every little contribution makes a big difference,” said Grace. “We wanted to remember those workers who are easily taken for granted, as well as leaders who made Singapore into what it is today.”

Mentoring Budding Young Scientists
| |
They patiently guided their young charges and helped them with the finer points of research and development. For School of Chemical & Life Sciences (Life Sciences) [SCL (LS)] lecturers Nilar Zhang and Dr Guo Xu Ming, their efforts were certainly worth the while. Their secondary school charges went on to excel in their projects at MOE’s 14th Youth Science Conference.
Xu Ming mentored students from Hwa Chong Institution (High School) on a screening project to identify antibacterial agents from local species of fungi. The project won a Certificate of Distinction in the Microbiology/Biochemistry section.
Nilar, on the other hand, took charge of students from Presbyterian High school, who looked into isolating biologically active compounds from tumeric plants. The project won a Certificate of Merit in the Chemistry/Material Science/Material Engineering section, and Nilar was given an “Outstanding Mentor” award.
Congratulations to our colleagues for winning the hearts and minds of the young!

A Portal to Call Their Own
Students who started term on 13 October 2008 had a new online resource waiting for them called the "myNYP Portal". This new portal provides a one-stop shop for students to access all e-services, applications and need-to-know student information. All users will receive personalised information.
Besides e-services, the portal has information on student-related NYP news, campus happenings, CCAs and lifestyle articles. There are also success stories on our students and graduates, to motivate and inspire. We hope that this portal will be a platform for students to engage with one another, as well as with NYP staff.
So if you have any student-related news, events or achievements, do let COMMS Division do about it, and we will help you get it on this portal.
