NYP’s STRATEGIC PLANS

NYP was established in 1992. For the first 5 to 6 years, the Polytechnic operated out of temporary campuses located around the island. The initial years were focused on setting up academic and financial systems, recruiting staff and developing capabilities, designing and launching new courses, enrolling batch after batch of new students and, of course, planning and building the new campus.

By the mid-1990’s, we established what has become the bedrock and foundation of NYP’s organisational excellence. Dubbed the NYP++ Framework, it spells out the 4C’s –Culture, Concept, Capability, and Connection –as the critical factors for NYP’s success over the long term.

At about the same time, NYP articulated its landmark Six Strategic Thrusts which put into practice many of the timeless strategies that were appropriate then, today, and will continue to be into the future. Arising from the goals of providing application and development-oriented training, the deployment of adaptive training systems, and the focus on capability development, we have today NYP’s distinctive pedagogical approach –the Teaching Factory Concept. Even in those early days, we saw the need for transnational cooperation partnerships and the importance of having a regional and international orientation. These early strategic thrusts sowed the seeds for today’s internationalisation efforts.

Two more strategic planning exercises followed. The one in 2000 focused on our people, on capacity building, and on developing a learning organisation. Concepts like Staff Re-Profiling, Borderless Schools, and Integrated e-Learning were introduced then but they have since become an institutionalised part of NYP today.

Strategic Plan 2003 led to the setting up of the Entrepreneurship Project Centre (EPC) and the launch of the Executive Programme Series (EPS) for managers and senior officers. Today, both the EPC and EPS have been absorbed into the Centre for Technology Innovation & Commercialisation (CTIC) and the Centre for Professional & Leadership Development (CPLD) respectively.

This current Strategic Plan 2008/09 will see us through the next 3 to 5 years. In drawing up this plan, we focused on the 4 key areas identified in our mission: Pre-Employment Training, Continuing Education & Training, Innovation & Enterprise, and Internationalisation.

To be a Premier Polytechnic of Global Distinction.

We provide quality education and training to prepare students and adult learners for work and life, equipping them to be life-long learners and to contribute to the technological, economic and social development of Singapore.

We harness our resources, expertise, creativity and innovation to support the development of business and industry and to complement Singapore’s globalisation efforts.

Over the years, NYP graduates have performed well in the job market and in further education. Most have gone on to successful careers or set up successful practices or businesses. Industry and universities tell us that our graduates are competent and well-trained technically. They are strong in application and practice, and are adept in project work.

Still, we would want to do more for our students so that they will graduate with enhanced communication and interpersonal skills, with greater confidence to take on leadership roles, and with a better appreciation of and a wider interest in subjects beyond their course of study. This goal aims at developing the all-rounder graduate.

Enhance Communications Skills component in curriculum
Incorporate General Studies into curriculum
Increase opportunities for leadership development
Encourage a healthy lifestyle among students
Foster greater awareness and encourage action to care for the community and the environment

Each year, NYP admits some 5,000 or more full-time diploma students. They bring with them a wide range of abilities, talents and interests. The polytechnic provides ample opportunities for all students to participate in a multitude of co-curricular activities. Most students will be able to find an interest group, a club, or an activity to suit their interests.

However, among every cohort of students, there will be those with special abilities and talents. It is the aim of this goal to provide more space for these students with special talents and passion – be it in academic fields, in the arts, sports, among others – to further develop and raise these talents to higher levels.

Provide avenues for students with the ability and capacity to pursue advanced studies or specialist training
Create more opportunities for students with special talents to develop their interests and passion in:

Personal & Leadership Development

Innovation & Creativity

Sports & Adventure

Arts & Culture

Environmental & Community Service

Students typically spend 3 years with the Polytechnic before they graduate. It is during this period that they will encounter many situations – from the teaching and learning in the “classroom” to their engagement in student activities on campus, and from their interactions with peers and mentors to the services and support they receive from the Polytechnic – that will shape their memories of being NYP students.

When students join NYP, they can look forward to quality education and training and to receiving a well-recognised diploma at the end of it. It is the aim of this goal to ensure that students will also obtain a good and positive experience – the NYP Experience – at the same time.

Enhance teaching & learning experience in the “classroom”
Enhance communication and interaction with students
Enhance student mentorship and support
Increase vibrancy of student activities
Enhance campus environment
Enhance the level and quality of student services

NYP welcomes diversity on campus and among our student population. Every year, we attract many international students into our courses. Coming from the region and beyond, they help enrich and add variety and colour to student life in NYP as well as provide an international dimension and a global perspective to the teaching and learning experience.

We will create an environment in which our international students can feel at home. We welcome them into the NYP community and into Singapore society where their different cultures and backgrounds are a source of strength and an opportunity for future networking and connections.

Provide appropriate assistance and support to international students
Create conditions to encourage interaction with locals
Provide opportunities for immersion into local culture and lifestyle
Engender a global mindset among local students

One of NYP’s key tasks is to prepare our students for work and life, and for lifelong learning. We aim to reach out to our prospective students and to provide them with information about the unique education & training opportunities that NYP offers so that they can make considered decisions on a suitable course of study when they leave their secondary school after their “O” Levels.

This goal aims to attract more and high-calibre students who are looking for quality education & training and a satisfying experience that NYP can provide.

Enhance partnerships with schools
Increase presence and mindshare
Improve effectiveness of outreach communication and processes
Enlarge range of relevant product offerings

AlumniNYP took in its first students in 1992. Over the years, and with each subsequent cohort, more graduates were added to the ranks of our growing alumni. Among them are many successful and influential individuals whose knowledge, experience and network of contacts would be a valuable resource and support for the Polytechnic and for future generations of NYP students. At the same time, the alumni can look forward to further upgrading opportunities, possibilities for collaboration in projects of mutual interests, and participation in social and networking functions organised by the Polytechnic.

The polytechnic is committed to growing this mutually beneficial relationship with the NYP alumni.

Cultivate a sense of belonging among students
Enhance communication with Alumni
Create more opportunities for Alumni to connect and network
Establish platforms for collaborations with Alumni

Apart from pre-employment training for school leavers, NYP has a crucial role in helping to meet the training and re-training needs of the workforce through various forms of continuing education & training. These include competency-based training for workers, customised courses for industry, upgrading programmes for polytechnic graduates, and professional conversion programmes for those seeking a career switch.

As Singapore’s economic landscape changes and with rapid advances in science and technology, there will always be a continuous need for learning and re-learning. This goal focuses our attention on harnessing our resources to support lifelong learning.

Expand range of relevant CET programmes
Increase areas of collaboration with relevant agencies and industry in offering CET
Introduce SIAT-sanctioned degree upgrading programmes for polytechnic graduates

We live in a knowledge-intensive era. Many things we do involve the application and transformation of knowledge into new ideas, new products, new processes, and new services. Moving forward, it is expected of our students and staff to be able to think in new ways, to find novel solutions to problems and to look for better ways of doing things. At the same time, we need to develop a habit of seeking out and creating new opportunities to create value.

This goal aims at fostering and promoting the spirit of innovation and enterprise among students and staff in the polytechnic.

Incorporate I&E into formal and informal curriculum
Enhance recognition and reward framework for I&E
Enhance existing and develop new capabilities in innovation and R & D
Leverage on external funding and valued partnerships

In the course of our engaging in innovation and industry project work, the polytechnic generates many new and novel ideas. Some of these have been patented and many others have found their way into products and solutions for industry. These are the polytechnic’s intellectual properties (IPs) and are a potential source of value waiting to be extracted.

This goal is focused on moving some of our IPs out of the polytechnic into the marketplace.

Provide a platform for the management and commercialisation of IPs
Promote our IPs in the market place
Provide a supportive and conducive environment for IP development

We live in a small and inter-connected world. Our staff and students need to understand that – as an individual, as a polytechnic, or as a nation – we cannot afford to be insular or expect to function effectively in isolation. Very often, we need to see events and interpret developments from an international – even global – perspective. Our students and staff need to appreciate the differences in practice and to be able to function across different cultures.

As a polytechnic, we too need to understand that we operate in an international arena. Many opportunities exist beyond the shores of Singapore. At the same time, others see many opportunities in Singapore too.

Provide more opportunities for staff and students to gain overseas exposure and experience
Incorporate international elements and perspectives into our curriculum
Attract and recruit a good mix of suitably qualified international students
Strengthen and enhance NYP’s brand name beyond Singapore
Promote NYP’s brand of TVET internationally
Expand NYP’s network of valued partnerships with international agencies, institutions and companies
