NYP was established in 1992. For the first 5 to 6 years, the Polytechnic operated out of temporary campuses located around the island. The initial years were focused on setting up academic and financial systems, recruiting staff and developing capabilities, designing and launching new courses, enrolling batch after batch of new students and, of course, planning and building the new campus.
By the mid-1990’s, we established what has become the bedrock and foundation of NYP’s organisational excellence. Dubbed the NYP++ Framework, it spells out the 4C’s –Culture, Concept, Capability, and Connection –as the critical factors for NYP’s success over the long term.
At about the same time, NYP articulated its landmark Six Strategic Thrusts which put into practice many of the timeless strategies that were appropriate then, today, and will continue to be into the future. Arising from the goals of providing application and development-oriented training, the deployment of adaptive training systems, and the focus on capability development, we have today NYP’s distinctive pedagogical approach –the Teaching Factory Concept. Even in those early days, we saw the need for transnational cooperation partnerships and the importance of having a regional and international orientation. These early strategic thrusts sowed the seeds for today’s internationalisation efforts.
Two more strategic planning exercises followed. The one in 2000 focused on our people, on capacity building, and on developing a learning organisation. Concepts like Staff Re-Profiling, Borderless Schools, and Integrated e-Learning were introduced then but they have since become an institutionalised part of NYP today.
Strategic Plan 2003 led to the setting up of the Entrepreneurship Project Centre (EPC) and the launch of the Executive Programme Series (EPS) for managers and senior officers. Today, both the EPC and EPS have been absorbed into the Centre for Technology Innovation & Commercialisation (CTIC) and the Centre for Professional & Leadership Development (CPLD) respectively.
This current Strategic Plan 2008/09 will see us through the next 3 to 5 years. In drawing up this plan, we focused on the 4 key areas identified in our mission: Pre-Employment Training, Continuing Education & Training, Innovation & Enterprise, and Internationalisation. |
