Nanyang Polytechnic’s (NYP) exceptional efforts and relentless pursuit for innovation has earned it the honour of being the first educational institution in Singapore to be awarded the Innovation Excellence Award (I-Award) by the Singapore Quality Award Governing Council.
NYP’s Principal/CEO, Mr Chan Lee Mun, received the prestigious award from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Teo Chee Hean, at the 2009 Business Excellence (BE) Awards gala dinner held at the Shangri-la Hotel on 4 November.
Launched in 2001, the Innovation Excellence Award (I-Award) is the highest accolade given to innovative organisations in Singapore. It is conferred upon the best of the best in recognition of their attainment as models of innovation excellence for others to emulate. The Award recognises organisations whose outstanding innovation capability development approach has contributed significantly to business excellence.
NYP’s strong leadership and commitment play a key role in charting the Polytechnic’s innovative journey, taking the lead in defining its vision, mission and strategic plans to develop the organisation into an innovative polytechnic.
NYP has a pervasive culture of innovation. The Polytechnic’s innovation journey is guided by its “Innovation Everywhere” framework that focuses on innovations in four key areas - Teaching & Learning, Organisation, People and Environment. |
| |
| Teaching & Learning |
| |
NYP’s unique Teaching Factory® concept provides students with a total learning experience. It ensures that students gain new knowledge, learn new skills and develop competencies in meaningful environments that emulate the real-world workplace. Complemented with NYP’s other innovative pedagogies such as the “Integrated Technology Teaching & Learning”, the Teaching Factory® is an excellent platform for industry projects and collaborations. |
| |
| Organisation |
| |
NYP is a borderless organisation. It continuously affirms the concept of “borderless teamwork” as an essential ingredient for innovation. As a learning organisation, NYP has developed the award-winning Accumulated Experience Sharing (AESTM) knowledge management system, which provides a rich reservoir of intellectual resources and best practices to support its learning needs. NYP is also a connected organisation with a wide network of local and international partners in industry, government and institutions. |
| |
| People |
| |
NYP strongly believes in capability development to support innovation. It provides opportunities for development of its staff to keep abreast of advances in science and technology. NYP has also developed its innovative “Staff Re-profiling” programme to prepare its people for emerging technologies and new responsibilities. NYP harnesses and channels its capabilities and the can-do spirit of its people towards purposeful innovations, like applied R&D projects and technology development. |
| |
| Environment |
| |
NYP provides an environment that is conducive for innovation to flourish. Facilities and policies are designed to encourage and facilitate borderless and cross-disciplinary teamwork. Students and staff are encouraged to participate in projects and competitions to challenge and develop their innovative talents. Links with international communities provide overseas exchange and attachment opportunities to engender cross fertilisation of knowledge and enhance the quality of innovation outcomes. |

|
Being an innovative polytechnic has resulted in key outcomes for NYP that include graduates who are well sought-after by industry, high-value industry projects, a wide portfolio of patents, as well as successes and recognition in national and international competitions by staff and students.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Chan said, “I dedicate this Award to all my wonderful colleagues and students in NYP as well as to our Board of Governors and all our valued industry and institutional partners whose support and contributions have made it possible for NYP to receive this prestigious accolade. The Award will be an inspiration for Nanyang Polytechnic as we take another step towards our vision to be a “Premier Polytechnic of Global Distinction.” Meanwhile, we can all say with great confidence and with great pride that we are “NYP – the Innovative Polytechnic.”
This is NYP’s second Business Excellence Award. It clinched the People Excellence Award that focuses on staff development in 2005. NYP has also attained several other organisational awards such as the Singapore Quality Class (SQC), the People Developer Standard (PDS), the Distinguished Public Service Award for Organisational Excellence and the Hewitt Best Employers Award. The Innovation Excellence Award marks a new and important milestone in NYP’s quest for continuous organisational excellence. |
