PM Lee at NYP: Gaining a Better Understanding of CET

Adult learners taking courses at NYP were given a strong encouragement when they were visited by a most distinguished guest – Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong.  In a visit organised by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency, NYP was one of the two Continuing Education and Training (CET) Centres which the PM visited on 21 April 2009.

During the one-hour visit, PM Lee toured facilities at the School of Health Sciences  (SHS) to view students from the Professional Conversion Programmes (PCP) in their classrooms and lab settings.   Some 140 adult students are currently enrolled in SHS courses here.

The highlights of his visit included the viewing of PCP Registered Nurses students at an operating theatre suite, as well as stopovers at a PCP Diagnostic Radiography lecture and a PCP Physiotherapy teaching clinic.  At the Simulation Centre for PCP Nursing students, PM even placed a nebulisation mask for a patient simulator, to relieve the symptoms of asthma.  He also used a stethoscope to check on the lung sounds of the “patient” .

At the end of the visit, PM had a fruitful dialogue session with 20 students from Nursing, Allied Health and Precision Engineering.

Said Chung Hai Yong, a second-year Diploma in Physiotherapy student who was formerly an IT manager,”It  was an eye-opening experience to have PM visit NYP and talking to students like myself.  He was very supportive of our programmes, and this gives me the reassurance that I’ve made the right career switch to the healthcare industry.”

Added Siti Khairunessa Abdul Kadir, a second-year Accelerated Diploma in Nursing student, “It was a very great honour for me to meet up with PM.  He chatted with me, and wanted to know why I joined nursing, and what areas of specialisation I plan to go into.  I felt very encouraged that he took the trouble to meet us and to find out more about why we made the career switch to become healthcare professionals.  Now I am more determined than ever to be a good nurse.”  Siti, who previously worked in Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports in the President’s Challenge Secretariat, felt her calling to be a nurse since she was 19.
