Three of our nursing graduates were awarded the prestigious Alice Lee Scholarship to pursue a Degree in Nursing. They were among eight nurses who received their award at the Nurses’ Day 2009 celebrations on 1st August.
The first recipient is recent Diploma in Nursing Graduate, Angela Kirk Hui Ping. Angela, the top nursing student at NYP Graduation 2009, will further her studies in Australia in March 2010. She will be pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Nursing (Post Registration) at the University of Sydney. Angela, who now works at the Intensive Care Unit of the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, hopes to enhance her skills, particularly in evidence practice.
“I am very excited and look forward to furthering my studies in Sydney, especially in the areas of research so that I can understand the different kinds of ailments better when treating patients,” she said.
26-year-old Nur Maizura Abdul Rahim will also be heading Down Under. Nur Maizura, a nurse at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) Urology Ward, will pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree, Nursing, at Curtin University of Technology in Perth.
Nur Maizura, who believes in life-long learning and skills upgrading, hopes to specialise in research work in the future.
“Contrary to belief, there are ample career opportunities and specialised areas for nurses like clinical work, management and training,” she said.
Another recipient from SGH is Staff Nurse Siti Zawiyah Mohamed. Siti, who topped her cohort in the Diploma in Nursing Programme (Accelerated) this year, is delighted with the award. She is still selecting which university to go to.
The Alice Lee Scholarship is worth $50,000.
