Singapore has done very well at the recent 40th WorldSkills Competition.  NYP’s competitors contributed in a big way, by winning the coveted Albert Vidal Award, three Golds and a Bronze in this prestigious biennial competition dubbed as the “Olympics of Skills.”  The competition was held in Calgary, Canada from 1 to 7 September 2009.

This year’s competition saw more than 900 competitors from 51 countries competing in 45 skills areas.  Team Singapore sent a team of 19 competitors from ITE and the polytechnics to compete in 16 skills areas.

Diploma in Information Technology student Tan Thiam Shui won the coveted Albert Vidal Award and Gold Medal for IT – PC & Network Support.  The Albert Vidal award is given to the top performer who achieves the overall highest score out of all competitors in all skill areas.  Thiam Shui feels that his greatest strength in the competition is his ability to stay calm and focused, even under stressful competition conditions.

This is the second time that Singapore has won the Albert Vidal Award.  In 2005, NYP graduate Viridis Liew also won the award for the same skill area, IT - PC & Network Support.

Juggling lessons, projects, hospital shifts, as well as WorldSkills training, was no easy feat for Carolyn and Adeline.  In fact, their NYP exams ended just before they packed their bags to leave for Calgary.  For this chirpy duo, their months of intense training paid off, when they won a gold medal in this competition.  This is the second time NYP has won a gold medal in Caring, since the skill area was introduced in 2007.

Joan has won Singapore’s first medal in Graphic Design Technology.  The soft-spoken and amiable girl has loved drawing since she was very young.  Joan believes that when she produces a piece of work, she must put her passion into it, and like what she has done, before she can convince others of its worth.  Joan feels that her ability to be meticulous and clear-headed when tackling a job is her strength.  She went into this competition with an aim of winning a gold medal for Singapore.

Edmund and Ye Seng have been good buddies since they were in first year. In fact, when they first heard about WorldSkills Singapore, they approached their lecturers and asked whether they could take part in the competition together. With their strong teamwork and good problem-solving skills, they won the Bronze medal in Mobile Robotics, which is Singapore’s first medal in this skill area.
