All “X-Sited” and Fired Up

For Business Informatics student Tan Jun Kai, the finals of the X-Site competition really got his adrenaline pumping.

“The finals was done in an ‘Amazing Race’ style,” recalled Jun Kai. “We were given tasks to do which are IT-related, such completing a Photoshop assignment and answering an IT quiz. I was very excited at first, but I became calmer after we have successfully completed our first task. With each completed task, we were allowed to proceed further with clues which led us to our next checkpoints. It was very exciting as we dashed from one place to another, trying to beat all the other teams who were doing exactly the same thing.”

Jun Kai and his three team mates, known as Team D.O.T.S, were rewarded for their efforts when they emerged Champions for the Polytechnic/ITE level of the competition during the finals of X-Site, held at the Singapore Science Centre on 1 August 2009. Another team from NYP’s School of Information Technology (SIT) won Second Runner-Up.

X-Site is jointly organised by the Singapore Science Centre, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and the Ministry of Education. It is part of the National Infocomm Competition 2009, a series of IT-themed competitions to generate greater awareness and attract young talents into IT fields.

The theme for this year’s competition is “Earth Fast Forward”, a theme that challenges the creativity and imagination of participants as they envisage what earth would be like in the future. Prior to the finals, participants had to come up with a digital artwork presentation to explain and illustrate their ideas.

Jun Kai explained, “While my team focused on highlighting the positive effects of technology advancement, we also went forth to provide a perspective of technology when it is not managed properly, which could lead to detrimental effects like global warming. In a way, we gave a balanced perspective.”

The team members felt that their preliminary submission, plus their good teamwork and performance at the finals, helped them to ace the competition. “I must add that the IT knowledge we have gained in our course certainly helped us to get ahead,” said Jun Kai.

Their reward? Cool prizes for their hard work. Besides trophies and prizes, the Champion team won iPods and the Second Runner-Up team won Nintendo DS Lite game consoles. The teams would like to thank the SIT lecturers and mentors for their constant encouragement and support, especially Mr Lee Chit Boon, Mr Ong Teck Kiat and Mr Gary Lim.
