Award of Diploma

Students must meet all requirements for graduation to be awarded their diploma. Graduation requirements include but are not limited to, meeting course requirements within the maximum candidature allowed and settling all payments due to the Polytechnic.

Diploma with Merit (DWM)

The DWM is, at the absolute discretion of the Assessment Board, awarded to graduates with consistent outstanding performance throughout their course of study.

To be eligible, graduates must have passed each module with at least a grade D in their first attempt. They must also have achieved at least or better than the cut-off Grade Point Average (GPA) for their respective course of study. The cut-off GPA for each course depends on the performance of the graduating cohort and is determined by the Assessment Board.

The DWM is generally awarded to not more not than the top 10% of graduates from each diploma programme.

Director's List

The Director’s List is awarded to students who excelled academically in the semester.

To be eligible, students must have a full study load for the semester. They must also have passed each module with at least a grade D in their first attempt in that semester and have achieved a Semestral Grade Point (SGPA) of not less than 3.0. For students who have been granted module exemption, the total credits earned through credit transfer must not be more than 20% of the full study load for the semester.

The Director’s List is generally awarded to not more not than the top 15% of students from each stage of study of each course.

Candidature

Students are allowed a maximum period of twice the length of the normal duration of the course or one (1) additional year, whichever is longer, to complete all the requirements of their course of study. For example, a student who is pursuing a three-year full time diploma course will be given up to six (6) years to complete his/her course of study. A student who pursues a six-month course will be given up to 1.5 years to complete his/her course of study.

The maximum candidature allowed for students who have been granted credit transfer will be adjusted accordingly.

Module Distinction

To be eligible for module distinction, students must have passed the module with a Grade A in their first attempt.  The number of distinctions awarded for each module is generally capped at not more than the top 5% of the number of students taking the module.

Grade Point Average (GPA)
GPA is computed using this formula:

Σ (Module Grade Point x Module Credit Value)

GPA

=

-------------------------------------------------------

Σ (Module Credit Value)

Eligibility for Module Credits / Examinations

To be eligible for module credits/examinations, students must have:

(a) attended not less than 85% of module instruction time at lectures, tutorials, laboratories and workshops associated with that module;

(b) settled all payments due to the Polytechnic;

(c) not committed any serious disciplinary act.

A student who is ineligible for module credits/examinations in a module is deemed to have failed in that module. This means that if the module is a repeat core module, he/she is liable to be removed from his/her course of study.

Award of Module Credits

Full credit is earned when students pass a module. Students, who have sufficient and acceptable evidence of relevant previous study and/or training, may be exempted from and given credit transfer for appropriate modules.

Withdrawal from Module

Students may, with valid and acceptable reasons, be allowed to withdraw from one or more registered modules in the semester. To apply for module withdrawal, students must complete a prescribed form (which is available at the School Admin Services Office) and submit it to their Programme Manager/Course Administrator/Course Co-ordinator by Week 8 Day 5 of the semester.

Students are advised to continue attending classes and sit for assessments until they receive notification that their application is successful.

No withdrawal from module will be allowed after Week 8 of the semester.

Supplementary Assessments

Students who obtain not less than 35% of the total assessment of a module shall be eligible for supplementary assessment, where provided, unless not permitted by the Assessment Board.

Repeat of Modules

Students who fail any core module for the first time, after the supplementary assessment if provided, will be required to repeat the module.

Students who fail any prescribed or complementary elective, after the supplementary assessment if provided, may either repeat the module or register for another prescribed or complementary elective. Students may repeat a prescribed or complementary elective up to two (2) times.

Removal from Course of Study

Students shall be removed from their course of study if they:

(a) repeat and fail a core module, after the supplementary assessment if provided, or

(b) obtain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 0.8 for two (2) consecutive semesters.

Absence from Examinations

Students who are absent from any examination for which they are eligible shall be deemed to have sat and failed the examination unless they have valid and acceptable reasons for their absence from the examination.

All documentary evidence, including medical certificates, for the absence must be submitted within the next two (2) working days following the absence at the Student Services Centre. If students have also made an online notification via the Student Portal within the period, they will be allowed up to the next four (4) working days following the absence to submit the hard copy document.

Medical certificates must be obtained from a medical practitioner registered with the Singapore Medical Council or a dental practitioner registered with the Singapore Dental Council, who ought not be a family member. Medical certificates from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners are not accepted.

Submission of a valid medical certificate does not guarantee an alternative assessment. The decision to allow students to sit for an alternative assessment is at the absolute discretion of the Assessment Board. Unless otherwise permitted, students will have only one (1) attempt at passing the alternative assessment.

Appeal for Review of Semestral Assessment Results

Students who have failed any module at the semestral assessment may appeal for a review of their results, if they have reasons to believe that they should have passed the module, within three (3) working days from the day the assessment results are released by the Polytechnic.

Appeals must be made on prescribed forms, available at the Student Services Centre. An administrative fee of $26.75 per module will be levied. The administrative fee will be refunded if the appeal is successful.

During the review, the Polytechnic will check to ensure that all components of the module are appropriately graded and that scores, if appropriate, are correctly computed. Students will not be shown their answer scripts. Students will be informed in writing if their grades remain unchanged or are revised.

There will be no appeals for re-grading of modules which students have passed. There will also not be any appeal for supplementary assessment results.

The Modular System

Modular & Credit-Based Academic System

All courses offered at the Nanyang Polytechnic follow a modular & credit-based academic system (refer to table below for NYP Assessment (Credit-Based) Regulations). Each course has a combination of different units of study called modules. These modules cover various subject areas relevant to the course and are broadly classified as follows:

Core

Prescribed Elective

Complementary Elective

These modules ensure that students receive a firm foundation in the central discipline of their studies.

Students must pass all relevant core modules to graduate.

Students are required to choose from clusters of recommended modules where available.

These help students to develop specific focus and fields of specialisation within their programmes.
Where available, these are options to expose students to subject areas outside their main discipline of studies.

Students may register for modules that match their interests.

Where permitted, students will enjoy the flexibility of choosing certain areas of study to match their interests and aptitudes or to adapt their academic workload to suit their pace of learning.
