- How do I choose a university to pursue my degree programme?
Identify the degree programme you intend to study while finding the university accredited with professional recognition for quality training in that programme. The admission criteria is an important factor to consider for successful application, while tuition fees and living expenses are factors to consider for an affordable and suitable environment for your studies. When considering an overseas university, other expenses to take into account include accommodation, transport, food, etc. You may wish to contact the Advanced Standing Coordinator of your School for further discussion.
- How much will I need for an overseas education?
The amount varies with the country you choose, location within the country, and the programme you intend to pursue. Tuition fees will vary among classroom-based, laboratory-based and clinical-based programmes. The amount of advanced standing you are given by the university will also decide the duration of your stay and hence, overall expenses. Do check with the various official representatives (British Council, IDP, etc.) for the latest figures.
- Are there scholarships for an overseas education?
Although some overseas universities do offer scholarships for undergraduate study, these are limited in numbers. Students are encouraged to check the universities’ websites and official representatives for updates. Click here for information on scholarships.
- How do I calculate my GPA?
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is shown on the academic transcript with effect from Oct 2004. You may request for a copy of your academic transcript from the Student Services Centre (NYP Block A, Level 2, Room A.201).
(Please note that there will be an administrative charge for the transcript.)
- How do I check that an overseas degree programme will be recognised by Singapore employers?
There is no central authority in Singapore that assesses or grants recognition for degrees obtained from overseas universities. The onus of deciding whether a candidate has the required qualities and academic training relevant to a job falls on the employer. You may check on the MOE website for further advice.
- The overseas universities I am applying to require the NYP Syllabus of my Diploma course. How may I obtain the hard copy?
The Registrar’s Office is liaising directly with local and overseas universities on advanced standing for NYP Diplomas. You may email particulars of the personnel handling your university application (name/designation/email address/university), and the degree programme you intend to pursue to Registrar_Office@nyp.gov.sg. Please provide your Year of Admission, Diploma and Specialisation so that the Registrar’s Office may advise the university on the correct syllabus.
- How do I get information on Advanced Standing granted for NYP Diplomas?
The information on Advanced Standing/Exemptions for NYP Diplomas is on the University Programme for Graduates Enquiry (UPGRADE) System. The system provides details of local and overseas universities offering further educational opportunities including information on credit transfer.
- The university I am applying to is listed in the UPGRADE System. The Diploma I studied, however, has not been given advanced standing for the degree programme I would like to pursue. Does that mean that advanced standing will only be given for specific NYP Diplomas that are listed?
No, it only means that the university has probably not evaluated your Diploma for that particular degree programme you would like to pursue. You may put in your application and concurrently, inform the university to contact the NYP Registrar’s Office for the syllabus of your Diploma for advanced standing evaluation.
- I am a graduating student. Can I pursue university education upon graduation and defer the Tuition Grant Bond?
Only students who meet deferment guidelines set by MOE are allowed to defer their bonds for further studies whether locally or overseas.
The general guidelines are:
a) graduated with a Diploma of Merit; or
b) secured a scholarship or sponsorship for further studies; or
c) male graduates who have been granted disruptions from national service. For the latest information, check the MOE website.
