School of Design

The School of Design (SDN) prepares young talents for the creative industries. Here in our vibrant environment, you can nurture your creativity to its fullest potential. You will learn how to bring together art, design, technological applications and marketing strategies, and develop ‘user-centric’ solutions which are aesthetically pleasant yet technically viable; spatial layouts and designs which are environmentally-friendly and efficient; and visual communication material that are easily understood and visually attractive.

SDN offers three design diploma courses: Industrial Design, Space & Interior Design, and Visual Communication. Together, these diplomas cover a broad range of the creative spectrum. They prepare you for industrial design, product design, space/interior design, exhibition design, event design, packaging design, graphics design, corporate identity design, publication design, branding, and advertising, to name some areas. Through these courses, you will build a solid foundation in design, including an appreciation of beauty and aesthetics, and how to generate ideas or concepts and render them, for example, digitally. You will learn how to put these concepts across objectively and develop them into ergonomic and functional prototypes, or livable spaces, or clean, simple communicative material.

At SDN, you will be trained to meet industry standards. You will have the opportunity to work on industry-based design projects. These highly-demanding projects require you to pitch your creative proposals, design and communication skills to meet the stringent requirements of business clients. Our design studios are fully equipped with the latest software/hardware tools, enabling your creative insights to “flow”. Here, you can transform your imagination into tangible products and innovations. Here is where you test your wings and begin the first of many wonderful, creative journeys.

We also prepare you for working life in the creative industries. In your final year, you would have the opportunity to participate in internship programmes where you will be attached to companies locally or abroad. During these stints, you will be exposed to different design and aesthetic cultures, consumer lifestyle preferences and a broad range of regional/international design work processes. These experiences will help you build an international outlook and a robust understanding of evolving design trends. In addition, you have the option of taking part in cultural immersion programmes in China, Japan and other countries.

The quality of our SDN students is unmistakable. Our students have won numerous top international and local design awards, including the prestigious RedDot Award and IF Award, Singapore Design Award, Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Awards, Young Designers’ Award, Packaging Star Awards, Asia Packaging Star Award, Singapore Furniture Design Awards, 4As Student Creative Awards, and the International Bicycle Design Competition. The future is bright for our graduates. Many of them have embarked on fulfilling careers with well-known local design consultancies and MNCs such as Design Exchange, Philips (Singapore), Nestlé (Singaopre), Scanteak, Wincor Nixdorf (Singapore), HP Singapore, MediaCorp, DP Design Pte Ltd, Resorts World Singapore, the BreadTalk Group and ADtitude Pte Ltd. Those who chose to further their studies have consistently made their mark in both local and overseas universities, gaining advanced standing of up to two years in related degree programmes at leading institutions.
