Serving with Passion
While completing a six-month enhanced internship at G2000, a retail brand under Wing Tai Holdings, Venezia won compliments from customers and her store manager. Her excellent performance led the organisation to recruit her as full-time staff and she is now a management trainee at Wing Tai.
Under the Earn and Learn Programme (ELP), she holds a job as a retail assistant while attending classes as an NYP Specialist Diploma student once a week to learn about retail management.
“The internship allowed me to learn more about the company and I gained a lot of hands-on experience during those six months. It can be tiring to stand for 44 hours each week for my job, but seeing customers leave the store happy with their purchases, and visit again at a later date to buy more, makes it worthwhile!”

Best of Both Worlds
Working at oil and gas giant Shell Singapore has been an eye-opening experience for Vinod since he started his stint as a process technician last year under the ELP. Besides being able to apply what he learnt in his classes, Vinod was also exposed to new workplace practices, which he picked up quickly with the guidance of his colleagues and mentor.
“I was accepted into the ELP after completing my course at NYP. It’s a very attractive programme. Time is set aside clearly for work and school, which helps me to focus and give my best without getting stressed out about managing both.”

Design for the Real World
Learning how to strike a balance between work and study was Min Zhen’s greatest takeaway from the Design and Make specialist diploma under the ELP. As part of the programme, she completed an internship at Shimano Singapore while continuing to attend weekly classes at NYP. Having to spend four hours commuting between work and school each time led her to develop better time management skills and greater self-discipline.
For Min Zhen, the programme provided a valuable opportunity for her to apply her skills in a real-world setting at Shimano, where she was involved in market research and product design. Armed with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, Min Zhen is now more ready than ever to take on the world of industrial design.

Being Hospitable in Hong Kong
“Joining Ovolo Hotel Group in Hong Kong as an intern for six months allowed me to work in hospitality and expand my knowledge of the industry. It also made me step out of my comfort zone as I had to live in a foreign country and take care of myself.”
I worked in different departments such as Reservations and Front Offce. At first, I had a hard time attending to some hotel guests because I don’t really speak Cantonese. But I gradually overcame this by listening to my colleagues speak and asking them for help with diffcult words. The best part of the experience was being able to interact with people from all over the world, which is something I really enjoy.”

Living a Different Life in France
A three-month internship at ESIEE Paris, a prestigious graduate school in the French capital, was Gim Long’s first taste of life in an overseas university. That was also when he had the chance to deepen his knowledge of LabVIEW software. He had learnt the basics at NYP but picked up more advanced techniques while working on an aircraft simulation programme at ESIEE. He felt pressured to perform well, but he overcame all the challenges and learnt to be more independent. Gim Long especially enjoyed the chance to travel and sightsee in France, and it was a wonderful and unique experience for him to get a taste of life in a foreign country.
