2017

Young Mayor Competition

Two teams of students from Diploma in Biologics & Process Technology (DBPT) and Diploma in Chemical & Green Technology (DCGT) took park in the Young Mayor Competition held on 1-2 April. 

The DBPT team won second runner up in the Senior Category B (ITE, Polytechnic and Equivalent Institution). They outlined broad policy directions to address the challenges in housing, transport, education, environment quality and other infrastructural requirements in an attempt raise the quality of life for Phnom Penh citizens. The competition helped the students develop their skills in creative problem solving, teamwork and nurtured them into responsible global citizens. 

Green Wave Environment Care Competition

Four students from Diploma in Chemical & Green Technology (DCGT) received the Encouragement Award for their project on “Horticulture Waste Recycler”. This competition was organized by Sembawang Shipyard, and the award ceremony held on 23 February 2017 was graced by the Minister of Education, Mr Ng Chee Meng. 

LKC Medicine Anatomy

A team of students from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences fought tooth and nail with top junior colleges (JCs) to make it to the finals of the inaugural LKCMedicine Anatomy Quiz organised by the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Nanyang Technological University. 

Altogether, 39 teams from 20 JCs and two polytechnics registered for the competition. NYP sent two teams and eventually one made it to the finals with four other teams from Hwa Chong JC, Catholic JC, River Valley High and Singapore Polytechnic. Along the way, the NYP teams knocked out participants from Raffles JC, Victoria JC and NUS High School. 

The competition centred around various aspects of human anatomy, from its history to the latest imaging technologies, and how these could be applied to modern clinical practice. Aspiring doctors also gained insights into anatomy and the chance to experience the medical school's modern teaching approaches. 

Participants also observed demonstrations using high-tech medical teaching equipment such as the Anatomage Table which allows for virtual dissections.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam Book Prize

Tan Yan Wei (Diploma in Medicinal Chemistry) has been awarded the Tharman Shanmugaratnam Book Prize 2017 for his excellence in community service on 30 April 2017.

Mason Nicholas Law

Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award Ceremony

SCL graduate Mason Nicholas Law from Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology was awarded the Merit Award for his invention:"Crustacean Fullness Assessment Device" at the Tan Kah Kee Young Award Ceremony 2016 held on 28 May 2016.

Seshan S/O Veerappan was a finalist in the Vasantham Thedal Star Search 2016. He won the most popular contestant award.

Felica Kwan

The International Union of Food Science & Technology (IUFoST) Honorary Mention Award

A team of five final year DFSN students (Gemma Gong, Felicia Kwan, Lee Yi Qi, Loh Yi Ming and Wong Zi Ying) won the Honorary Mention Award.  The product they submitted was extruded Potato-Cabbage Bites “Potageous Bite”.

Young Mayor Competition

Three students from Diploma in Chemical & Green Technology participated in the Young Mayor competition with their proposal on developing Jakarta in a green and sustainable way.  Their submission was awarded 2nd runner-up in the Senior Category B (for Polytechnics and equivalent institution). 

Tharman Shanmugaratnam Book Prize 

Tan Yan Wen, a year 2 student from the Diploma in Medicinal Chemistry was awarded the Shanmugaratnam Book Prize 2016 on 23 April 2016 for his active involvement in community service. He has been actively involved in National Cadet Corps (NCC) since 2011 and is now the EXCO for NCC West District. His enthusiasm coupled with his effective coordinating and communication skills motivated many cadets to participate in the various HQ-organized events. 

12th Singapore National Crystal Growing Challenge (NCGC)

NCGC is a biennial event organized by the National University of Singapore. Students from various institutions took part in this competition on 01 Jun 2016 to hone the mastery of the art of crystal growing. This year, SCL sent two teams of two students each to participate in the Senior category. SCL Team 1 won the Champion prize and the Biggest Single Crystal Award; and SCL Team 2 won the Runner-Up prize.

2015

SG50 Local Champions, Global Leaders Competition

Six student teams from SCL participated in the SG50 – Local Champions, Global Leaders competition. In this competition, the student team partnered with a company based in Singapore, and worked with the company to feature the company in an exhibition held at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre from 5 – 10 Feb 2015.  The objective of the exhibition was to bring to life the values, sacrifices and contributions of the people behind the business. Three teams were shortlisted for the second round and one of the teams, Cularcell (comprising of three Stage 3 students from DMB) emerged Champion in the Polytechnic Category A competition and also 1st runner-up in the Most Creative Team Award.

Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award Presentation 

The SCL team consisting of two DCGT students and one DBPT student was awarded the Commendation Award for their 'Sing-A-Swipe' invention.  The device cleans tables with a single swipe across it, giving diners a cleaner and more hygienic table for dining.  It also has a faster cleaning process, thus increasing productivity of the cleaners and benefitting food outlet operations, especially during peak hours when there are more diners. 

Spirit of Enterprise (SOE) Student Interviewer Programme

A total of 63 students from Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology (DMB) and Diploma in Medicinal Chemistry (DMC) participated in the SOE Student Interviewers Program on 11 July 2015. A team of 4 students from DMB (Muhammed Shahrizuan, Nq Qing Hao, Yeo Bo Wen and Vishnu Varathan) won the SOE- CHARLES & KEITH Student Interviewer Award 2015 ($500 cash prize). The SOE-CHARLES & KEITH Student Interviewers Programme provides a platform for tertiary students from different fields of study to meet and interview local business entrepreneurs. Through the interview process, students hear first-hand stories that make evident the resilience and perseverance of the entrepreneurs – values absolutely crucial to inculcate in our youths today.  

SIFST Quiz Bowl Competition 2015

Four DFSN students participated in the individual and team event in a Q&A competition of knowledge and quick recall. Teams were randomly made up of students from different IHLs. Two SCL students were members of the Champion and 1st runner-up teams respectively.
