NYP SANDS Leadership Development Centre Sarimbun Scouts Camp Wayfinding Project 2016

47 students from SDN’s Visual Branding & Identity and Visual Communication programmes spent a day at the Sarimbun Scout camp engaging with SANDS Leadership Development Centre’s facilitators to design a wayfinding system to help users to better navigate while in the campsite.

Located at Jalan Bahtera, off Lim Chu Kang Road, the 12 hectares Sarimbun campsite of the Singapore Scouts Association provides a rural enclave for boy scouts from local schools, being a natural classroom for undisturbed observation, contemplation, evaluation of nature and to learn the art of survival.

The students worked collaboratively in design groups during brainstorming sessions and impressively presented their ideas to the facilitators. After only a lesson on wayfinding, the student designers demonstrated that they were able to comprehend the function of wayfinding, distinguish the types of wayfinding and demonstrate ability to conceptually create a wayfinding system. As with many of SDN’s industrial projects, the project encouraged collaboration, exploration, discovery and learning while understanding the need for sustainability. The afternoon saw the students engaged in various confidence-building activities.
