Specialist Labs

The Specialist Integrated Technology Teaching and Learning laboratories (ITL) in the School of Chemical & Life Sciences includes:

Diploma in Chemical & Pharmaceutical Technology

The School of Chemical & Life Sciences (Chemical)'s Specialist Laboratories are situated at Block R Level 1.

Occupying some 350 m2 floor area, they consist of two pilot plants:

  • Chemical pilot plant

  • Pharmaceutical pilot plant

The pilot plants serve as a bridge between laboratory-scale apparatus and life-size industrial plants, thereby providing an unique learning environment on the applications of key chemical processes, unit operations and process control technologies prevalent in the industry.

The pilot plants can also be used to produce pre-clinical trial materials and other R&D purposes.

Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology

These laboratories situated at Block Q, Level 6 focus on the following areas:

  • Molecular Diagnostics

  • Functional Genomics

  • Proteomics

  • Pharmacogenomics

  • Drug Development

  • Clinical Trials

  • Bioprocess Technology

  • Bioenterprise & Bioinnovation

  • High Throughput Analysis (DNA Microarray Bio-Automation)

  • Cell Culture for Cell Lines, Primary Cultures & Stem Cells

  • Bioprocess Technology for Biologics Production

Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences houses laboratories situated at Blk Q, Level 6. These laboratories focus on the following areas:

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry

  • Animal Studies

  • Clinical Trials

  • Drug Development

"Health@NYP - The Teaching Drug Store" located at Blk A, Shopping Arcade, is a unique teaching enterprise concept for training pharmacy technicians in performing over the counter patient counselling, selling and recommending products to customers as well as learning how to support its running operations. Students attached at the teaching drug store can:

  • apply their knowledge gained to hands-on practices

  • equip themselves with the confidence and knowledge of over the counter medicines to better handle customers and patients both in the retail as well as hospital settings

  • gain business management skills and explore ideas of entrepreneurship

  • be trained as operational ready pharmacy technicians, ready for the industry even prior to their industrial attachments, thus, increasing their potential for employability

Pharmaceutical Sciences has a Pharmacy Training Centre located at Blk Q, Level 5. This is a novel training centre which has the following functions:

  • Simulates an environment where students are exposed to the normal operation workflow of an outpatient pharmacy.

  • Provides students the opportunity to pack and dispense prescriptions during practical dispensing sessions, develop their patient counselling skills via role-playing workshops and to allow them to practise their drug information skills when handling enquiries utilizing the drug reference section

  • The drug reference section in this centre can serve as a mini resource area for research purposes and for conducting small discussion groups with students or visitors

  • A rehabilitation corner will be designated as a storage area of rehabilitation equipment for training purposes.

  • This centre can also showcase and display exhibits and students' project work such as patient information leaflets (PILS), posters for visitors.
