School of Design Wins Gold Award!
"Worldskills London 2011 was held on 5-8 October in ExCel London. As a competitor competing in the Visual Merchandising skills trade category, I was given two project briefs, each to be completed in two days. I recalled feeling really tensed on the first day as I familiarize myself with my work area. This was so much different from the National round and I knew bigger challenges awaited me!
During the execution, I knew planning my time was the key to success. Time was of the essence, and I had to seize every minute. However there were times things did not go as planned. The materials and tools were also slightly different from what I used during my training. I however made do with what I had and gave it my best shot.
Four days passed swiftly, and a sense of great satisfaction came upon me when I heard "Stop work." I was really delighted to know it was all over despite feeling so drained. Now all I had to do was wait for the results.
We were all invited to the O2 stadium for the award ceremony. The performances were really grand and welcoming. I waited anxiously, fidgeting on my seat as they announced the results from other skills.
When I heard my name being awarded the Bronze Medallion under the Visual Merchandising skills trade category, I jumped for joy! It's the best moment of my life to be able to represent Singapore, going up on stage and receiving the medallion. Looking for the beaming happy faces of Team Singapore, I was greeted with assurance. I knew I did Singapore proud.
Winning this competition was made easier with the help of the lecturers. They allowed me to be exposed to reputable companies, provided the training and helped with numerous invaluable comments. I would sincerely thank each and everyone for helping me in this successful journey of a lifetime."
