The 16th FIRA HuroCup was held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from 27-30 August 2011. FIRA HuroCup is likened to an Ironman competition in which a humanoid robot has to compete in eight different events. The team from SEG(M), comprises of 6 staff and 7 students, competed intensely to out-perform our 20 competitors from 7 countries, including veterans from UK, Taiwan and Korea. After four grueling days, NYP won 8 Gold medals, 6 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals. NYP is the single institute that won the most number of Gold medals.
NYP amazed the competitors and judges with our sterling performance for Obstacle run and our unique design of our Large-size robot.

FIRA has not only increased our technical competency, it has also strengthened the character of those who participated in it. Cheng Zhibo, a Development Technologist said, “The preparation process was very tough – we worked very hard. But when I looked back, the experience is sweet and beneficial. During the competition, I observed my competitors to learn from them and improve my robot. FIRA taught me that nothing is too difficult to one who is willing to put effort to achieve his targets. I love FIRA competition!”
![]() FIRA is also an eye-opener - Chen Jiahao, another Development Technologist said added, “This competition is so amazing - we have never seen so many humanoid robots together in one place doing the same things. We exchange our experiences with teams from different countries and learn from each other. We enjoyed the competition and appreciate their guidance and support from our lecturers. We are happy with the good result and the fantastic experience.”
After the gruelling competition, we travelled to Taipei to experience the exciting night markets and tuck in all the yummy food before flying back to Singapore. This is wonderful and exciting experience that will stay in our memories for many years. |
