Specialist Diploma in Wireless Technology
The Electronics industries, with business activities focused on R&D, Production, System Integration of Wireless Products and Services, remain as one of the key contributors to Singapore’s economy. Singapore aims to be a world-class electronics manufacturing hub with end-to-end R&D capabilities and continues to position herself as the choice location for companies to create and manage new markets, products and processes, technologies and applications
In view of the needs of the industry and the continued demand for Wireless/RF engineers as well as focused training to further develop the skill-sets of existing pool of engineers in new and emerging wireless technologies and systems, there is a need to introduce a new continuing education programme in Wireless Technology to address these manpower development needs. Hence, the School of Engineering has specially designed the Specialist Diploma in Wireless Technology programme to develop specialist manpower with the know-how and expertise in the design and development of wireless products and systems to address the continued wireless industry demand for Wireless/RF Engineers.
The Specialist Diploma in Wireless Technology offered by School of Engineering, is a programme for engineers to develop specialist with the know-how and expertise in the design and development of wireless products and systems.
On completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Design and develop wireless communication products
- Perform test & measurement on wireless communication products for type approval & certification
- Use EDA tools for wireless product design and development
- Design and implement high-performance baseband platform for digital signal processing and control
Nanyang Polytechnic will award the Specialist Diploma in Wireless Technology to participants who have passed all formal assessments and the design projects.
- Post-Diploma Certificate in Wireless System Design focuses on digital wireless communication system & test.
- Post-Diploma Certificate in RF Design focuses on RF circuits and sub-systems design & test and EMC design considerations & compliance testing.
Post Diploma Certificate in Wireless System Design [150 hrs]
Module 1: Wireless Transceiver Design [60 hrs]
This module covers system design considerations for wireless transceivers, as well as radio environment considerations such as propagation, uplink and downlink issues. Participants will learn to design and test different wireless systems for deployment. Use of EDA tools for system simulation and test & measurement techniques for system characterisation, validation and standards compliance shall be covered.
Module 2: Digital Baseband Design [60 hrs]
This module provides participants with an in-depth understanding of design flow and implementation in advanced digital system design. Participants will acquire expertise in Hardware Description Language coding, simulation, logic synthesis, integration and be able to design & develop digital baseband modules on FPGAs and ASICs.
Module 3: Wireless System Project [30 hrs]
In this module, participants will have opportunities to apply and integrate knowledge and skills acquired in the programme in a wireless system design and implementation application. Participants are expected to develop projects to accepted industry standards and practices.
Post Diploma Certificate in RF Design [150 hrs]
Module 1: RF Circuit Design [60 hrs]
This module focuses on RF circuit design and implementation. Participants will learn how to design and implement RF modules, taking into considerations the critical RF parameters, the design trade-offs for different architectures and selection criteria of components. RF circuits covered include filters, linear/non-linear amplifiers, oscillators, PLL synthesizers, mixers etc. Participants will also use EDA tools to design and optimize RF circuits to specifications.
Module 2: Antenna Design & EMC Consideration [60 hrs]
This module focuses on the design of different types of antennas used in modern wireless communication systems and electromagnetic compatibility issues in wireless communication system design. Topics covered include antenna design, measurement and characterisation; EMC design considerations for RF circuits and wireless communication system and EMC test standards and methods.
Module 3: RF Design Project [30 hrs]
In this module, participants will have opportunities to apply and integrate knowledge and skills acquired in the programme in a RF circuit design and implementation application. Participants are expected to develop projects to accepted industry standards and practices.

Applicants should be a degree graduates in relevant areas or polytechnic diploma graduates in relevant areas, with preference given to those who have at least 3 years of relevant working experience.
