Lim Ziyou

Class of 2009

Lee Kuan Yew Award Winner, 2009

Synopsys Gold Medalist, 2009

At first glance, Ziyou may seem like an average Singaporean youth. But this soft-spoken young man had an interesting childhood which shaped his character and outlook in life. At the age of 13, Ziyou left Singapore to start a new life in Spain. His father, a cook, wanted to open a Chinese Restaurant in the Spanish city of Malaga. Overnight, Ziyou went from being a Secondary 1 student from Woodlands Ring Secondary School to the only Asian in a Spanish public school.

Ziyou had no problems adapting to his academic like back in Singapore. He regularly aced his Electronics, Computer & Communications Engineering course and was President of School of Engineering Club. He topped his cohort with his outstanding results and Co-Curricular Activities. He was the Lee Kuan Yew Award Winner from Diploma in Electronics, Computer & Communications Engineering in year 2009. He is currently pursuing the Electrical & Electronics Engineering degree at Nanyang Technological University.

His advice for students to ace their studies in NYP : Do not just memorise the theories or contents of textbooks. Most importantly, we need to understand the basic concepts and theories which will allow us to go beyond the textbooks." I also discovered that teaching fellow classmates and sharing information helped to stimulate the thinking process.  When I do so, I would gain in-depth knowledge of the subject and even discover new perspectives and ideas."

Attending orientation will definitely help to smoothen out the initial 'kinks' in this transition from secondary school to a polytechnic. As for tips on "surviving" campus life, he would encourage you to make full use of school facilities. Go to the library to get reference materials and to the cafe for a cuppa when your mind needs just that extra boost.  Make use of the various sports facilities to de-stress and get your mind off school work. Not only will you get to create wonderful memories with friends, you also keep the balance between work and play.

Tan Su Hui

Class of 2008

Lee Kuan Yew Award Winner, 2008

Rhode & Schwarz Gold Medalist, 2008

National Infocomm Scholarship

"Passion and Possibilities - this was the theme of Orientation when I first stepped into the School three years back. Truly, the time spent at NYP have been filled with energy and passion, and a whole myraid of possibilities I had never imagined. Coming to NYP was definitely a turning point in my life!", said Su Hui

“My course in Electronics, Computer & Communications Engineering laid a strong foundation for me in both theory and practice. Throughout my course of study, I was exposed to many emerging technologies. The work I pursued constantly challenged and excouraged me to not only apply my existing knowledge but also to take the initiative to learn more beyond the classroom. These experiences have also taught me independence, the importance of innovative thinking, and the need to keep pace with fast changing technology.”

Su Hui was the Lee Kuan Yew Award Winner from Diploma in Electronics, Computer & Communications Engineering in year 2008. As President of School of Engineering Club and Microsoft Student Partner, Su Hui had the opportunity to work with different people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. She also learned the significance of teamwork and bringing value to others through the sharing of knowledge and experience. She is currently pursuing the Electrical Engineering Degree at National University of Singapore.

"These three years mean much to me, especially the unforgettable memories, and the relationships I have forged with lecturers and peers. I loved every minute of my time at NYP, for it was here that I realised my potential and pursued my dreams! I am glad I made NYP my first choice!"

Hayley Pham

Class of 2005

Sembcorp Utilities Scholarship

First Class Honours, Imperial College

Hayley has achieved what many dream about – a First Class Honours from a prestigious university. In 2007, she graduated with First Class Honours in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Imperial College, UK.

“It was tough going, as there were as many as 11 modules to juggle with many projects. But I’m influenced by the Singaporean spirit of excelling in whatever we do…so I set my heart and mind to do well. Plus, my lecturers and friends at NYP showed a lot of faith in me, and I simply couldn’t let them down!” said Hayley, who hails from Vietnam.

She first joined NYP to take up the Diploma in Electronics, Computer & Communications Engineering in 2001. After graduating in 2004, Hayley worked as a Development Technologist at NYP to gain work experience, before attaining a scholarship to further her studies in the UK in 2005.

Despite her hectic schedule, Hayley enjoyed her studies. “I feel fortunate to have done both a diploma and a degree. The diploma gave me a strong engineering foundation, and the nature of the NYP diploma is that it is very practical, which helped me, especially in projects. And the degree has allowed me to gain an in-depth study of the various fields of Electrical and Electronics engineering,” said Hayley, who is now working as a senior executive in the energy business development field.

Stanley Lim Wee Tong

Class of 2003

First Class Honours, Nanyang Technological University

Pursue your desire, dreams and goals and you will have no regrets.

Stanley has graduated with First Class Honours in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in 2009.

His advice to the 'O' level students would be to pursue what you really desire and have interest in. As long as you have the passion and drive, no matter which areas of studies you choose, you will definitely excel and succeed beyond your imagination.

Back in 1999, after the completion of his ‘O’ Levels, he entered Nanyang Junior College under the “first 3 months” programme. Afterall, JC education is probably the usual path that students would take prior to university education. "My results were good enough to stay in NYJC or to transfer to AJC. However,I chose to enter the Polytechnic. I knew what I wanted in life and JC education may somewhat be too generic for that." said Stanley

Since young,he always had the desire to innovate and create new things to contribute to mankind through engineering and technology. He knew that he needed a strong foundation to achieve that. So after browsing through the curriculum of courses offered in the then four main polytechnics, indubitably,he knew ECC would be the course. Since then, he never looked back, and indeed he is grateful that he has made a critical choice that he never regret.
