Wireless Technology Centre
BackgroundThe Wireless Technology Centre (WTC) was established in 1994 as one of the Specialist Centres in the School of Engineering of Nanyang Polytechnic. The Centre focuses on the advancement and applications of wireless communication technologies for the development of innovative solutions. The key thrusts of the Centre are:
Areas of SpecialisationThe Wireless Technology Centre is directed towards innovation of advanced wireless products and systems. Emphasis is placed on the development of:
Industry ServicesThe Wireless Technology Centre supports companies in meeting the challenges of advanced product & system development. Support can be in the form of collaborative product development, full turnkey system development, project/technology consultation and customised training programmes,
A team of experienced professionals in the field of wireless technologies, signal processing and programming is available to meet current and future wireless product development needs. The Centre has been providing product development support and special customised training programmes to industries and is committed to the continued growth of these support services.
With a dedicated team of professionals, comprehensive state-of-the-art instruments for RF development, shield room, antenna test & measurement system, project development rooms, laboratories and RF CAE workstation tools, the Centre is well positioned to support wireless product development needs for today and the future.
Project InformationThe Centre has always actively sought collaboration with its industry partners and has been engaged in several projects over the years. Highlights of some of them:
Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Radio TransceiverThis project involved the design and development of a low power, hand-held Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio transceiver unit for voice and high data rate wireless ad-hoc networks. New techniques in UWB signal generation, detection & synchronisation, antenna designs and embedded intelligent network controls were used in the design for voice and data communication demanding low probability of intercept and detection in communications systems.
Telematic System for Vehicle Security
This project involved the development of a Telematic system for vehicle security. This intelligent system provides theft alert, remote monitoring and location determination of the vehicle via the existing cellular network infrastructure and GPS. The project leveraged on the Centre's expertise in antenna design, wireless communication product design, application development and position aware system development. The end product can also be deployed effectively for fleet control and management applications.
RFID System for Classroom of the FutureThe RFID system developed was deployed in the National Institute of Education’s Classroom of the Future (COTF) showcase. The project involved the design and implementation of embedded RFID antennas, development of software drivers for the RFID readers, and the system integration and tests.
