Physiotherapists (Professional Conversion Programme)

Graduates of the Diploma in Physiotherapy are competent health science professionals who possess the knowledge and ability to manage and prevent problems affecting the physical functioning of the human body. Physiotherapists  implement evidence-based techniques to manage disorders of the human body for people of all age groups and focus on maximising each client’s physical abilities in order to achieve optimal independence.

 

 

Course Aims

The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive learning and practical experience, so as to enable them to function as fully competent physiotherapists upon graduation. Through lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, simulation, on-site teaching clinic and clinical education, the course will equip students with:

  • the knowledge of body mechanics, biological and behavioural sciences, disease process, health promotion and physiotherapy concepts in managing disability;

  • an understanding of the legal and ethical aspects of professional practice;

  • the ability to accurately assess, critically analyse and provide intervention for a variety of musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neurological, sports-related, gerontological, paediatric and other impairments;

  • the confidence to conduct clinical research and implement evidence-based physiotherapy programmes for all age groups; and

  • the skills to work independently within a variety of healthcare and community settings. 

 

Duration

3 academic years on a fulltime basis

 

 

Career Prospects

Opportunities are abundant for graduates of this course from Nanyang Polytechnic. They can work independently in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports clinics, specialist centres for management of cancer and heart conditions, psychiatric centres, community healthcare centres, homes for the elderly sick and in wellness clinics. They can also find career opportunities in research facilities, educational institutions and health and wellness sectors. Their clients may range from elite sports individuals to the frail elderly, and their work environment may vary from hydrotherapy pools to private clinics.

 

NYP's Diploma Physiotherapy course is recognised by Singapore’s Allied Health Professions Council and has been given accreditation by the Singapore Physiotherapy Association, a member of the World Confederation of Physical Therapy. Graduates are eligible to register for practice as physiotherapists in Singapore and worldwide, subject to local regulations.

 

There are ample opportunities for continuous education and further specialisation. From September 2012, NYP’s Diploma in Physiotherapy graduates can undertake the Singapore Institute of Technology and Trinity College Dublin degree upgrade hosted by NYP. The TCD degree in Physiotherapy is an honours programme. Classes for this tuition grant funded programme will be conducted at NYP in Singapore and will include a 6-week overseas attachment in Dublin, Ireland. Other degree upgrade, masters and doctoral programmes are available through overseas universities in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, the United States and the United Kingdom.
