Director's Welcome

Welcome to the home page of NYP’s newest school, the School of Interactive & Digital Media or SIDM for short.

Having consolidated our key IDM diplomas under one roof, we became a new school in 2006. But unique to Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), SIDM came with more than 12 years of pioneering experience and capabilities.

SIDM is reputed for having launched the first animation and games design program, the creatively renowned Diploma in Digital Media Design (DMD) in 1996, and the first industry-recognized games programming program, the IT-savvy Diploma in Digital Entertainment Technology (DET) in 2005 as well as the exciting and long awaited industry endorsed Diploma in Motion Graphics and Broadcast Design (MGBD) in 2007.

Not known for resting on its laurels, NYP continues to enhance its suite of diploma programs to meet the knowledge and skills demands of industry as well as the creative desires of our students. Hence, come April 2009 SIDM will launch a new diploma and reorganizes its existing diplomas into the following new courses.  (Check out our website for course details)

C57 Diploma in Digital Visual Effects NEW COURSE!
C59 Diploma in Digital Media Design (Interaction Design) NEW CODE!
C60 Diploma in Digital Media Design (Games)NEW CODE!
C61 Diploma in Digital Media Design (Animation)NEW CODE!
C66 Diploma in Motion Graphics & Broadcast Design
C70 Diploma in Digital Entertainment Technology (Games)

Students applying for these courses are to note the new
course codes.

Students accepted into these courses will not only have the right breadth and depth of key foundation modules but will also be equipped with the necessary specialized knowledge and focused skills to meet the increased demands of the IDM industry. With top-notched companies like Lucasfilm Animation Singapore, Koei Entertainment, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts including Infinite Frameworks, Scrawl Studios, Big Communications, Lights and Shadow, Blackmagic Design, Peach Blossoms, Raintree, Mediacorp, VHQ and a growing list of many others, the emphasis on better and relevant education and training in IDM must be maintained.

SIDM will continue to be a talent-centric school and seeks passionate students to pursue their interest in this creative, imaginative and challenging industry. We will provide opportunities for students to explore, discover, refine and create, doing cool stuff like creating their own game or virtual worlds, producing their own animation or for clients, trying out new ideas for visual effects, interacting and immersing new media and real objects, offering new ideas for digital advertising, and applied research, besides others.

SIDM will continue to work with our industry partners to create opportunities and real-life environment and projects for our students. For example, we recently set up a live games studio for students to work with staff and industry professionals to develop games and to enable them to have development experience from mobile and PC to hand-held and console game platforms. Similarly, while animation students will be exposed to creating and working on broadcast ready animated TV series and other co-productions, our motion graphic students will work on real life projects with our post-production and broadcast industry partners to generate motion media and TV commercials.

SIDM will also continue to create more opportunities for students to be exposed internationally through participating in international competitions and festivals, and through our tie-ups with our overseas partners. Students will have the opportunity to be selected for overseas attachment to companies or institutions in USA, France, Canada, China, Korea, UK and Australia. Study trips to key conferences like Siggraph and Promax/BDA in USA, Tokyo Game Show, and others including studio visits in conjunction with the conferences will also be organized with students in mind.

Students undertaking any one of these diploma courses will also have opportunities to learn from industry practitioners and overseas experts from top animation and games studios and companies through our master-classes and workshops which are held during the academic year.  They will also follow the footsteps of our graduates to work in some of the top-notch companies in Singapore as well as overseas. Alternatively, they could also further their studies either at bachelor degree or master degree levels at universities or institutions locally or overseas. Currently, our graduates have direct admission to masters program in USA such as Carnegie Mellon University (Entertainment Technology Centre), Savannah College of Art and Design, and Rhodes Island Institute of Art and Design, Bournemouth University in UK, and to the more traditional bachelor degrees in USA such as Academy Art University, Ringling College of Art and Design, OTIS, Sheridan College in Canada, a majority of universities in UK, Australia and NZ and locally to DigiPen, NUS and NTU as well.

It is an invigorating and challenging industry to be in and with many exciting years ahead. We welcome you to the School. See you in April 2009.

Best Regards
