Melvin

Mr Melvin Tan, who graduated with Diploma in Business Informatics in 2005, was awarded the IT Youth Award 2006 on 25 February, for his entrepreneurial spirit and his work in using IT to help others.

His passion for IT started during his secondary school days, when he was president of his school's computer club. His business acumen saw him setting up his first company to produce and sell batteries for micro-mouse robots. His entrepreneurial adventures took him to other projects such as online games, PC networking and IT services for clients. In his final year at NYP, he started another company Tinkerbox Corporation. Tinkerbox Corporation allows him to move into software application development and one of its products - SMILES - has been trialled successfully at two primary schools. Plans are underway to commercialise the software. Another product Synapse, was placed as 2nd runners-up at the National Microsoft Imagine Cup competition in 2005.

The IT Youth Award aims to recognise outstanding youths aged 25 and below for their creativity, critical thinking skills and capabilities in IT accomplishment, research and projects. Melvin is the fourth NYP graduate to have won this prestigious award.

Congratulations, Melvin!
