Microsoft Imagine Cup 2012 Competition (Software Design Category)
![]()
It was the best of technology and science that saw this year’s Team AlphaWaves garnering the CHAMPIONS in the local finals of the Imagine Cup 2012 – Software Design category. Their winning project - ‘Dementia Assistance and Recall Engine (DARE)’, utilises Windows 8 and Windows Azure, to create a mobile digital scrapbook that will be used as part of Reminiscence Therapy (RT) to help stimulate recall of memories for dementia patients. Their innovative application will stimulate recall of past memories through photographs and other media (e.g. sound, video) that can be presented on a PC or tablet to remind the elderly and persons with dementia of their past and who they are. DARE even deploys an active link to user’s brainwaves to analyze and make sense of their cognitive and mental abilities to help in stimulating their recall capabilities.
This project caught the eyes of many judges during the competition as it had a direct and huge impact on the increasing number of dementia patients in our aging society.
The team emerged triumphant out from over 85 entries, judged by a panel that includes Managing Director of Microsoft Singapore Jessica Tan, Jeffrey Paine of Golden Gate Ventures (and an adviser to Young Upstarts), Gwendolyn Tan of fellow Singapore-based entrepreneurship site SGEntrepreneurs, and Bernice Ang, founder of Syinc.
As the CHAMPIONS, Team AlphaWaves will travel to Sydney, Australia, this July to represent Singapore in the worldwide finals and showcase their innovation alongside hundreds of other students from around the world.
The team comprised of the following students from the School of Information Technology and the School of Health Sciences :

For the second time in a row, SIT students did Singapore and NYP proud at this leading international student technology competition.
Third-year Diploma in Information Security student Mong Yunheng emerged as the second runner-up in the IT Challenge category of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2011 Competition. Selected from among the thousands of students who participated in two qualifying rounds, Yunheng represented Singapore in the worldwide finals against five other participants from China, France, Germany, Poland and Romania.
"This year, I took part in the IT Challenge category which allowed me to make use of my knowledge attained in my studies as a final year student in the Diploma in Information Security in NYP. The real-life IT and infrastructure scenarios which we had to solve and develop during the competition spurred my interest as this would eventually be something I would look forward to in my future academic pursuits and career," said Yunheng, 1 of 4 Microsoft Student Partners in NYP.
The finals, held in New York City in July 2011, saw the participants competing in a 24-hour hands-on lab challenge, in which they had to design, set up and implement certain IT infrastructure and systems, utilising the various Microsoft technologies.
Congratulations Yunheng!
