Cross-disciplinary NYP teams comprising SBM and SDM students, beat out 32 other teams from various polytechnics and local universities to clinch two of three grand champion titles in the inaugural Maritime Singapore Connect (MSC) Maritime Digital Challenge. Each team took home a cash prize of SGD$3,500. The event was held on 13 November 2021, and graced by Senior Minister of State for Transport, Mr Chee Hong Tat. The competition challenged contestants to deliver tech-based solutions for standing business case challenges faced by three companies in the maritime space – shipbroker Eastport Maritime, digital learning specialist Kanda, and freighter company Torvald Klaveness. In the Eastport Challenge, NYP’s Penta Crew presented EVenture, an interactive gamification platform to onboard new hires and deliver job-specific learning to existing employees. Meanwhile, team Chocolate Whales developed the Maritime Extended Reality Training System (MERTS), a virtual reality simulator that enables users to perform hazardous on-vessel procedures, for Kanda. Both teams took the crowns in their respective challenges amid fierce competition from TP, NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD and SIT teams.
