SDM students create short films & premiums for Nickelodeon
School of Design & Media Published on 28 Mar 2022

Our SDM students recently had the opportunity to create animated short films and premiums for children’s TV channel, Nickelodeon.

If you have been following the well-loved children’s television channel Nickelodeon on social media, chances are you would have seen videos and giveaways created by our SDM students!

Thanks to our collaboration with the TV channel since 2020, students from the Diploma in Animation & Visual Effects were given the opportunity to work with, and learn, from industry experts, and have their works showcased to a wide audience (their Facebook channel has 29.7 million followers).

Two teams of students had the experience of developing their very own animated shorts: from refining their storylines to seeing through the entire production process. They also learnt real-world production matters: knowing the target audience (and importantly, their culture), and keeping in line with the (Nickelodeon) brand.

Meanwhile, Year One and Poly Foundation Programme students from SDM participated in a Premiums Design Competition held jointly by NYP and Nickelodeon. The objective? To create premiums as part of the publicity campaign for a new Spongebob Squarepants spin-off series, Kamp Koral.

Student Gina says: “Winning the competition was a sweet surprise and made our 12-hour Discord calls, brainstorming interesting premiums, worth it.” The winning design was further refined under the guidance of SDM’s Grace Toh, and has been produced as part of a premium set. These premiums are given out to Nickelodeon’s subscribers and as prizes for their Facebook contest.
