Can you name the amazing women who helped shape Singapore throughout history? If you need a history refresher, help is on hand!

A team of Common Business Programme Year One students from the School of Business Management (SBM) developed a creative history-making concept, The SG Bicentennial Wonder-SG-Women for the Swing Singapore Challenge 2019. The concept highlights 200 historic female figures through an innovative DIY doll-making kit which is designed to allow anyone, young to old, to create and learn about women’s contributions as nation-builders, community-shapers, war heroines, family guardians and career superstars.

Organised by Made of Brilliance and supported by the Singapore Bicentennial Office and National Youth Council, the Swing Singapore Challenge: Bicentennial Edition 2019 invites youths aged 13 to 19 years old to create an event, video, activity, App or any other format to showcase Singapore’s history beyond 200 years through their creative lens.

Competing against other finalist teams from Ngee Ann Poly, Temasek Poly and Republic Poly, the SBM team emerged champions and clinched a $3,500 cash prize.

Jewlee Leong, co-founder from Made of Brilliance said, “Their solution of DIY dolls of charismatic women honours the contribution of women over the past 200 years, and that resonated with the audience and garnered them a unanimous decision by the panel of judges.”.

Cassandra, the team leader affirmed that, “We wanted our project to recognise women’s place in our history. In coming up with our project, we discovered so many inspirational women who are role models for both young women and men.”. Cassandra also received a Commendation for Leadership at the prize-presentation ceremony.

The organisers are keen to implement the team’s winning idea and we look forward in seeing the products in the market.
