Our Diploma in Infocomm & Media Engineering will gear you up to be a leader in this exciting world. Whether it’s developing innovative software applications, creating creative & UX-centric media designs or deploying/securing critical apps on cloud infrastructures, there are plenty of opportunities for you to contribute in this area.

Our curriculum is designed to give you a multi-disciplinary foundation in the first 3 semesters of your studies. During this time, you will gain knowledge and skills in software development, networking technologies and digital media design. By the 3^rd semester, you would have understood your interest and strengths better. You will then select and undertake one of the following elective programmes for the 4^th and 5^th semesters.

Year 1

Core Modules

Programming Methodologies & Practices [60 hours]

This module introduces the concepts and methodologies of software program development. Learners will learn the various stages of program development including problem analysis, algorithmic design, software development, as well as test and debugging techniques. This module will train learners to be able to analyse and develop software solutions in a methodical fashion.

Digital Media & Design [60 hours]

This module covers the essential principles and techniques to create digital assets for various digital media applications. Learners will gain skills and knowledge in creating aesthetically pleasing visuals for multiple platforms by practicing a range of tools and techniques through practical sessions and exercises. Learners will follow a design-oriented approach and be encouraged to interpret, translate and apply the tools and techniques learnt to aesthetically pleasing digital assets for various digital media applications.

Computer System Essentials [60 hours]

Understanding computer systems, one of the most pervasive systems in modern society, can help us to leverage on technology to solve problems effectively. This module provides learners with the knowledge of the workings behind a computer system: its main and peripheral hardware, networking capabilities, operating system, and software. Learners will also be armed with practical skills to set up, operate and maintain a computer system.

Electrical & Electronics Fundamentals [60 hours]

Electronic systems are designed to solve specific problems in many areas of our daily lives. This module will enable learners to acquire knowledge in electrical & electronic principles through design and prototyping of functional analogue & digital circuits that are commonly encountered in IOT & media systems.

Algebra [60 hours]

This module provides learners with the basic mathematical principles and tools necessary to build their engineering foundation. It will enable them to apply mathematical methods, tools and notations proficiently in the analysis and solution of engineering problems. Topics covered include mathematical functions (polynomials, exponential, logarithms, step functions and trigonometry) commonly used in engineering, complex numbers, determinants, matrices and vectors.

Fundamentals of Innovation & Enterprise [60 hours]

Learners will develop attributes that are pervasive and synonymous with being innovative and enterprising for career and life. Through this module, learners will develop positive practices when working with data, propose ideas using user-centric approaches and design processes, determine and locate resources, and leverage collaborative practices to formulate solutions.

Object-Oriented Programming [60 hours]

Object-oriented programming makes it easy to maintain, modify & reuse existing code through classes and objects. This module introduces learners to oriented-oriented programming concepts, techniques and applications. It will prepare learners to use object-oriented software libraries in subsequent modules.

Database Fundamentals [60 hours]

Software applications generate and manipulate information which are usually stored in databases. This module equips learners with foundational knowledge on relational databases. Learner will use Structured Query Language (SQL) to store, retrieve and manipulate data using industry-standard relational database management system.

UIUX Design [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with the skills and competencies in creating good user experiences within aesthetically pleasing websites. Learners will be able to analysis, design and validate through the different phases of user experience design life cycle with case scenarios, examples and exercises. Learners will interpret, translate and apply the user-centred design techniques learnt to create effective layouts for multi-devices.

Web Development [60 hours]

This module covers the design and development of web pages using HTML mark-up language and the CSS styling language to equip learners with essential knowledge and skills in developing effective front-end web applications. Learners will learn the basic techniques in creating responsive web design for multi-form factor devices.

Data Communications & Networking [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with essential data networking knowledge and skills required to design, implement and test small local area networks (LANs). The focus is on how networking concepts and technologies can be applied, configured and integrated in home and branch office networking environments.

Effective Communication Skills [30 hours]

Communicating well is a vital life skill, benefitting all aspects of our lives from professional life to social gatherings. It is thus important to be proficient in both written and oral communication. This module will enable learners to communicate effectively in different settings and on different collaborative platforms. There will be opportunities to practise and deliver various types of presentations, to learn to competently handle questions, and to effectively incorporate verbal and non-verbal elements when speaking. Learners will also acquire media and info literacy; and be able to produce clearly written and well-structured reports and proposals, following standard citation and referencing guidelines.

Web Design & Development [60 hours]

This module builds on the fundamentals of web design by introducing interactivity to web pages. It provides an understanding of the processes involved and the practical guidelines for creating interactive web pages that enhances user experiences. Through project development, learners will learn the concept and techniques in creating engaging website based on business specifications.

Open Source Web Solutions Development [60 hours]

This module covers the concept and characteristics of open source software, and the use of open source tools, namely Apache, PHP and MySQL for the implementation of web solutions. Through project implementation, learners will learn how to set up and configure an open source development environment, and acquire skill sets in using the technologies to design, develop and deploy open source web solutions.

Server Administration [60 hours]

This module introduces important technological concepts of the two dominant server operating systems, Windows and Linux operating systems. Learners will learn to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) and Command Line Interface (CLI) to perform common system administrative tasks. Learners will also implement different Windows-based Active Directory environments to comply with different system requirements.

Cybersecurity Essentials [30 hours]

This module covers essential concepts of cybersecurity threats and issues facing organizations. Learners will learn the principles and techniques in cybersecurity implementation for data, applications, computers and network systems to maintain and ensure security operational readiness.

IoT System Development [90 hours]

Internet of Things (IoT) systems are used to help automate, monitor and support decisions in a variety of situations in today’s society. In this module, learners will explore different types of, and develop IoT-based applications. They will learn how the technologies such as sensing and actuating devices, network communication and transmission, edge computing and cloud services interoperate to provide an IoT solution.

Workplace Digital Skills [30 hours]

This module enables learners to use word processing software to create, modify and style document/report effectively and efficiently. Learners will use spreadsheets to manage, organise and model data as well as to perform analysis and report generation. Creation of customised, dynamic and multimedia-style presentations using software tools will also be covered. Through hands-on practices, learners will gain these skills and apply them in project work in preparation for the digital workplace.

Communication & Personal Branding [30 hours]

In today’s competitive environment, a strong personal brand sets one apart from others. In this module, learners will develop techniques to impress and persuade others to accept their ideas. They will also learn how to communicate effectively over e-mail. To support their job search, learners will use digital portfolios to showcase their abilities, as well as gain the knowledge and skills to promote their capabilities in their cover letters and resumes. They will also acquire skills to project themselves positively and for performing well at interviews.

Internship Programmes [12 or 24 weeks]

This module enables students to put into practice the knowledge and skills that they have acquired from the course in real-life work environments. The students will be assigned work tasks or projects, with clear learning outcomes that are relevant to their courses and intended job roles, during the internship. The students will be guided by mentors from the industry and NYP to help them perform on the job and to achieve the learning outcomes. This will allow students to gain work-centered knowledge and skills, and work-related experiences. In addition, they will acquire important work values and ethics which include being responsible and positive, as well as taking initiative and exercising integrity. Through this work-based experiential program, students will be better prepared for work and life.

Full-Time Semestral Project [12 weeks]

This module enables students to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have acquired from the course to develop solutions for real-life applications. Projects will be assigned to students who will work under staff supervision to develop and produce the desired project deliverables. In addition to equipping the students with technical and soft skills for project development, this module will enable students to develop problem solving skills and instill the habit of lifelong learning to prepare them for entry into the workforce.

Emerging Trends & Technologies [30 hours]

Advancement and application of infocomm & media technologies are ever changing. The objective of this module is for learners to gain a deeper understanding of the latest of innovative technologies and apply them in their projects. This module will be conducted through various delivery approaches such as seminar-style sharing by industry practitioners, visits to industry and conferences as well as self-directed research.

Software & Applications

Gain knowledge and skills to design, develop & test full-stack web and cross-platform mobile applications. You can also take elective modules on app deployment on cloud, data analytics as well as UI/UX design to complement your core training.

Core Modules

Software Engineering Practices [60 hours]

Software engineering is the process of dividing software development work into distinct phases to meet business requirements and ensure software quality. This module covers software engineering best practices with specific focus on the phases and activities in a software development lifecycle (SDLC) to ensure software quality and robustness. Learners will learn project planning and control, requirements engineering, and software modelling, architecture, design, testing and maintenance.

Software Security & Testing [60 hours]

Software testing and vulnerability assessment is crucial in ensuring a smooth and secure experience for software application users and businesses. This module covers the principle, techniques, and practices of software testing and vulnerability assessment in building quality software. This includes development of test cases, performing defect management and reporting, and conducting automated testing. Learners will also learn to conduct vulnerability assessment on web applications to identify common software security risks, as well as applying techniques to mitigate such risks.

Mobile App Development [60 hours]

Well-designed and developed mobile applications are part and parcel of the modern life. This module covers the design, development and deployment of applications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Mobility concepts, design considerations and practical deployment issues in the face of specific constraints imposed by different mobile platforms will be addressed.

Web API Development [60 hours]

Web Application Programming Interface (API) allows for separation of business logic and user interface in software application development. This makes software applications more modular, easier to develop, test and maintain. This module equips learners with concepts and skills for developing and consuming web services. Learners will learn essential technologies include scripting languages and web development frameworks to develop web APIs and server-side logic. Learners will also develop applications that use such web APIs.

Database Modelling & Implementation [60 hours]

Well designed and implemented database models make software applications more efficient and easier to maintain. This module focuses on the data modelling process that will allow learners to design and implement data models and relational database schemas based on business requirements. The learners will learn how to normalise relational data tables to improve efficiency. The learners will also learn how to implement and manage stored procedures, triggers and table constraints.

Cross Platform Mobile App Development [60 hours]

Cross platform mobile application development allows developers to develop a single code base for multiple mobile platforms. This reduces the need for companies to maintain multiple native code bases, improves application maintainability and speed to market. This module equips learners with the knowledge and skills to undertake cross-platform smartphone and tablet-based application development. Learners will also learn commonly adopted business models and marketing strategies for smartphone/tablet applications.

Infocomm System Project [120 hours]

This module consolidates the knowledge and skills that learners have learnt and provides them a platform to develop, test and implement end to end scalable applications to solve real life problems. The learners will work in teams and use front and back end technologies and frameworks to implement their solutions. They will also undergo the whole SDLC process from design to deployment.

Data Analysis & Visualisation [60 hours]

Companies use data analysis and visualisation to optimise business operations, mitigate risk & fraud, offer personalised services, improve customer experiences and/or detect underlying trends. This module equips learners with a working knowledge of statistical concepts and skills to process and analyse data for better decision-making. Topics covered include descriptive statistics, linear regression and correlation, probability and probability distributions. Learners will also learn to design graphical, interactive presentations of information for effective visualization by different levels of management.

Web Application Development Framework [60 hours]

Web application development frameworks allows businesses to develop more secure, maintainable software and improves time to market. This module covers dynamic web application development using the Model-View-Controller (MVC) software architectural pattern on an application development framework. Learners will appreciate how the framework and MVC pattern improves web development as well as security, performance, scalability and maintainability of web applications.

Business Process Automation [60 hours]

Digital transformation of complex business processes allows businesses to improve service quality, delivery and costs. This module equips learners with concepts and skills for improving business processes through the use of Business Process Automation (BPA) and Robotic Process Automation (RPA). Learners will be guided in the use of a popular RPA tool to apply theory into practice. Topics to be covered include BPA/RPA usage scenarios & technologies, data & variables, control flow, workflow & sequencing, events & triggers, script development, error/exception handling and debugging.

Cloud Architecture & Services [60 hours]

This module equips learners with an overview of cloud concepts, core services, security, architecture, and pricing model of cloud platforms. Through hands-on practices, the learner will learn to identify, provision and operate various types of cloud services including networks, security controls, computing and storage.

Advanced UIUX Design [60 hours]

This module focuses on the principles and techniques in the design of good user experiences within various digital media and mobile applications. Learners will be able to identify user requirements, conduct user research and usability testing, and create wireframe prototypes or solutions for digital products and mobile applications.

Cloud Infrastructure & Services

Gain knowledge and skills to design, deploy, test and manage server and network infrastructure in enterprises and cloud datacenters. You will also be trained to secure infocomm infrastructure and services based on industry best practices.

Network Technology [60 hours]

This module equips learners with comprehensive networking concepts and skills, including switching and routing technologies and protocols commonly used in enterprise networks. Learners will apply and practice the networking knowledge and skills through a series of hands-on and simulated lab activities that reinforce their learning.

Virtualization Essentials [60 hours]

This module introduces the concepts of virtualization for different infocomm infrastructure components. Through hands-on practices on creating Virtual Machines (VMs) in a hypervisor environment and implement the various features of the VMs commonly used in enterprises, learners will understand and appreciate the benefits and the applications of virtualizations.

Cloud Architecture & Services [60 hours]

Advanced Server Administration & Security [60 hours]

This module covers advanced Windows server administration and security concepts. Learners will learn to implement various Windows server security policies to comply with system security requirements. Advanced Active Directory concepts to fulfil specific system administration requirements will also be covered. Learners will also learn to implement native Windows hypervisor to in a virtualized environment.

Cloud App Provisioning & Management [60 hours]

This module equips learners with architectural knowledge of designing and implementing cloud infrastructure according to industry best-practices. Such practices include scalability, high-availability, and fault-tolerance. Learners will be able to evaluate, analyse, translate and implement cloud services according best-practices to meet business requirements.

Virtualisation and Cloud Computing [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with knowledge and skills to design, secure and deploy a highly scalable data centre fabric architecture, using a converged and virtualised infrastructure. Learners will learn to design and implement the virtualised ICT resource pools, join resource pools of servers, network and storage through the fabric interconnect and use software to configure and manage them. Learners will be introduced to the various cloud service models - SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and will develop expertise to design, configure, secure and deploy cloud infrastructure and services.

Infocomm Infrastructure Project [120 hours]

This module covers the design, simulation, configuration and testing of an enterprise infocomm infrastructure testbed through project scenarios. Learners will gain in-depth knowledge and skills required to implement a large scale infocomm infrastructure that comprises servers, network equipment and applications to meet enterprise infrastructure requirements.

Cybersecurity Operations & Administration [60 hours]

This module provides the knowledge and skills needed to secure enterprise infrastructure. Learners will learn how to implement network access control and tunnelling technologies for remote access. Learners will also learn to set up and operate enterprise firewall and IDS/IPS systems, incident response and vulnerability management systems. At the end of the module, the learner will have in-depth and hands-on knowledge in cybersecurity principles and concepts.

Network Services Implementation & Management [60 hours]

This module covers the design, implementation considerations and challenges of critical network services in an enterprise network. Learners will also learn to deploy, manage and support these essential network services in the Windows and Linux environments that are commonly deployed in enterprises.

IT Service Operations & Management [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with the skill sets to ensure IT services are delivered effectively and efficiently using industry standard ITIL practices. Learners will learn to filter and categorise events for appropriate actions, manage the lifecycle of all incidents and problems, perform access management and fulfil service requests via the service desk function. Aspects of the IT operations management functions as well as the application and technical management functions will also be covered.

Information Design & Visualisation [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with the ability to transform data and complex information into clear, meaningful and aesthetically pleasing visual representations in accordance with effective design principles. Learners will be able to draw on typography, graphic design, applied linguistics and cognitive psychology to develop infographics and interactive representations.

Advanced UIUX Design [60 hours]

Animation for Digital Media [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with a comprehensive understanding of the creation and deployment of digital creatives for the digital media industry. Learners will gain knowledge and useful tips to create web elements through the careful application of basic design guidelines. Learners will be able to design and create eDMs, web banners and social media ads by using simple animation to enhance brand awareness.

Portfolio Design & Development [60 hours]

In this module the learners will design and develop a professional digital portfolio required for the digital media industry. Learners will conduct an in-depth research of the skillsets required and consolidate design projects to create a unique and effective portfolio for the industry.

UI/UX Design Project 1 [120 hours]

In this module the learners will create a digital collaborative project that requires the integration and consolidation of digital media & design, UIUX design and development skills learnt in previous semesters. Learners will be tasked to work on projects to deliver solutions for real-world applications which will equip them with the skillset and experience that are relevant to industry needs. Learners will be able to experience project management, project conceptualization, design, development and implementation.

UI/UX Design Project 2 [120 hours]

In this module the learners will create an experiential collaborative project that requires the integration and consolidation of digital media related skills learnt in previous semesters. Learners will be expose to real-life projects which requires a mixture of skillsets from 2D animation, video production to projection mapping by using the latest or emerging technologies within the market.

3D Modelling & Technologies [60 hours]

This module aims to equip learners with techniques in 3D modelling, animation and rendering. Polygonal and spline modelling are covered together with keyframe animation techniques. Rendering topics include 3D texture mapping and composition, special effects generation and advanced lightings. Learners will acquire skills to create complex 3D objects and experience the process of compositing 3D animation clips.

Creative Imaging [60 hours]

This module introduces creative techniques and the workflow for compositing 2D imagery as well as moving imagery. It covers topics such as Chroma Key photography and videography, image editing, composition and optimization for delivery of impactful media to desktop and mobile devices. Learners will learn to capture, create and design 2D imagery as well as to integrate media and design elements with colour and lightings. Production workflow in both digital photography and videography will be undertaken using industry standard tools.

Multimedia Production [60 hours]

The module teaches in-depth industry authoring systems, tools and techniques for creating interactive multimedia projects. It also focuses on production and integration of different media elements on different delivery mediums. At the end of the module, learners are required to use various authoring and production tools to develop an original multimedia project from concept to implementation.

Gain knowledge and skills in acoustics, lighting and video projection to design and implement interactive and immersive media-rich infotainment displays and showpieces. You can also take elective modules on information design & visualisation and multimedia production to complement your core training.

Acoustics & Audio Systems [60 hours]

This module develops learners with the know-how in analogue and digital audio system design, integration, deployment and optimization. Learners will be able to determine spatial acoustic characteristics and devise audio systems layout to meet spatial and event requirements.

Video & Projection Systems [60 hours]

This module will enable learners to develop video & projection system design through understanding of display & projection technologies and distribution systems. Video system architectures for different presentation & broadcast needs will also be covered.

Media Systems & Programming [60 hours]

This module will enable learners to program room and show control processors used in media systems. Learners will understand control protocols, processor specifications and network infrastructure. They will integrate audio-visual & media sub-systems for remote control, monitoring and automation.

System Design & Project Management [60 hours]

In this module, learners will learn to perform needs analysis and analyse functional requirements to produce design documents for projects incorporating media systems. Learners will also use design and project management tools to plan and manage design and development activities within a project lifecycle.

Media Solutioning Project 1 [120 hours]

This module develops learners’ ability to design, implement and manage integrated audio, video, lighting, broadcast and control systems for fixed installation scenarios. Learners will apply knowledge and develop skills in systems configuration and programming for remote control, automation and resource management for applications in various sectors such as corporate, education and healthcare.

Media Solutioning Project 2 [120 hours]

This module provides learners the opportunity to design, plan, deploy and operate systems for live, dynamic and interactive installation scenarios. Learners will analyse client and event requirements and formulate solutions with emphasis on control and synchronization of different media sub-systems.

This module will provide learners the knowledge and skills required to design and implement lighting solutions for fixed and live installations. Learners will understand visual perception, lighting technologies, lighting control systems as well as practical design considerations.

This module enables learners to understand and implement media systems found in production and broadcast studios. Learner will have hands-on practice using media systems for acquisition, ingest, asset management, archival, streaming and distribution.
