NYP competitors have demonstrated their prowess and pipped international powerhouses to win one gold, two silvers, two bronzes and five Medallions of Excellence at the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition.
In the process, they racked up four firsts for Singapore!
Sit Shun Le, who recently graduated from our Diploma in Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering, won the first gold medal EVER in Additive Manufacturing. This is a new competition for WorldSkills reflecting the impact this technology has had in the world.
Braedon Tay won Singapore’s first medal (a silver) in Chemical Laboratory Technology, which is about how technical professionals work in a chemical lab. The skills required include handling of chemicals, carrying out chemical experiments and doing problem-solving using scientific methods.
Coby Yong and Ryan Warwick Han (bronzes) won Singapore’s first medals in the Aircraft Maintenance and Cloud Computing categories – usually hard fought by countries like the UK, Korea, Japan and China.
Known as the Olympics of Skills, the WorldSkills Competition is a biennial competition for youths worldwide with outstanding talents in various skills areas. In 2022, the WorldSkills Competition was held across 15 countries, each hosting a different set of skill areas. The competition was renamed WorldSkills 2022 Special Edition and featured over 1,000 competitors from 55 countries. Singapore sent 29 young men and women to do battle in 26 skills areas.
Says Shun Le: “I feel honoured to be a pioneer in such a prestigious competition. I’m glad I was able to highlight Singapore as a forerunner in additive manufacturing on the global map.”
Adds Braedon: “WorldSkills gave me the chance to meet young talents from around the world. The competitors were the best from their nations, so going up against them was stressful yet thrilling.”
