"The Rescue" has soared to victory at the 2023 Animex International Short Film Competition
School of Design & Media

Our student, Charleen Tang, proudly accepted the award from Teesside University's Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) Dr. Warren Harrison and scored an incredible opportunity to experience the Animex Festival in the UK. Engaging with industry experts, she showcased the brilliance of our institution on the global stage with her team's winning production. She took the role of director and worked with team members - Nikki Poh En Qi, Khoo Kai Ning, Ashley Naneesha Campbell, Chen Tien, Jenn, Chloe Peng Jia Xuan, Wint Yupar Ko, Chen Hongsheng, Dana Christy Banan Sunglao & Mohamad Zulhilmi Bin Azhar - to produce "The Rescue".

Special kudos to Senior Lecturer, Ms Lorna for her exceptional guidance and unwavering dedication over 24 weeks, steering this remarkable animation project to success.

The competition was fierce, with nearly 100 entries of exceptional quality. The process of selecting winners was challenging, highlighting the exceptional creativity across the board.

Animex, an international festival of animation, games, and VFX, is the pinnacle of this industry. The event was organised by Teesside University and ran from 6-10 November at Middlesbrough Town Hall. It was a week of unparalleled insights to the production industry, networking, and more.

Beyond "The Rescue," other projects from the NYP - SDM, Diploma of Animation and Visual Effects have also made waves. "Heart of Pearls" achieved Quarter Finalist status at the Student World Impact Film Festival and was selected in eight other film festivals. "Reconnection" and "Ghost Ah Gong" animations have consistently earned spots in over 10 film festivals, solidifying their mark in the industry.

These achievements reflect our commitment to nurturing talent that shines not just locally but on the global stage. We're proud to support our students in their journey towards excellence in the world of animation and visual effects.
