Diploma (Conversion) in Paramedicine

About the Course

With the increased complexity of pre-hospital emergency care, advancements in military medicine and rising public expectations, there is a need to further enhance the skills of paramedics, to keep abreast of evolving field medical doctrine and the broadening scope of paramedic practice.

Nanyang Polytechnic, in collaboration with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), SAF Medical Training Institute (SMTI) and the Unit for Pre-hospital Emergency Care (UPEC), developed the 12-month part-time Diploma (Conversion) in Paramedicine for in-service Emergency Medical Specialists with the aim to deepen their knowledge of medical sciences and research to enable greater understanding of paramedic treatment protocols, so as to better manage complex medical emergencies. The course will also equip them with transferable skills such as communication, leadership, logistics and crisis management, to improve operational effectiveness and work efficiency.

Learners can look forward to learning from experienced trainers from the School of Health and Social Sciences and School of Business Management.

What You'll Study

Post-Diploma Certificate in Paramedic Science

Module 1: Cells, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases [30hrs]

This module introduces students to the study of bioscience and general pathophysiology. The principles of microbiology and the pathophysiology of infections relevant to paramedicine are also discussed. Case scenarios based on pre-hospital and emergency care will be presented and utilized over the course of this module and, through reflective learning, students will be facilitated to evaluate and integrate new skills and knowledge with their existing experiences.

Module 2: Nervous, Endocrine and Musculoskeletal Disorders [30hrs]

This module examines the study of the organization, structure, functions of body systems, such as nervous, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems. The pathophysiology of related disorders relevant to paramedicine is also discussed Case scenarios based on pre-hospital and emergency care will be presented and utilized over the course of this module and, through reflective learning, students will be facilitated to evaluate and integrate new skills and knowledge with their existing experiences.

Module 3: Cardiovascular, Haematological and Respiratory Disorders [30hrs]

This module continues the examination of the organization, structure and functions of body systems, such as cardiovascular, circulatory and respiratory systems. The pathophysiology of related disorders relevant to paramedicine is also discussed. Case scenarios based on pre-hospital and emergency care will be presented and utilized over the course of this module and, through reflective learning, students will be facilitated to evaluate and integrate new skills and knowledge with their existing experiences.

Module 4: Digestive, Urinary, Immune and Integumentary Disorders [30hrs]

This module continues the examination of the organization, structure and functions of body systems, such as gastrointestinal, urinary, immune and integumentary systems. The pathophysiology of related disorders relevant to paramedicine is also discussed. Case scenarios based on pre-hospital and emergency care will be presented and utilized over the course of this module and, through reflective learning, students will be facilitated to evaluate and integrate new skills and knowledge with their existing experiences.

Module 5: Pharmacology [30hrs]

This module introduces the students to the major concepts in pharmacology including the rationale for drug use and the various processes that impact on the safe and effective use of drugs, with emphasis on pre-hospital and emergency medications.

Post-Diploma Certificate in Paramedic Management

Module 1: Introduction to Human Behaviour and Communication [30hrs]

This module introduces students to the study of human behaviour and the role of communication and group dynamics amidst working in teams. Students will learn to develop effective and appropriate interpersonal communication and conflict management skills applied to the emergency and paramedical setting. Situation-specific case scenarios will be developed and utilized over the course of this module and, through reflective learning, students will be facilitated to evaluate and integrate new skills and knowledge with their existing experiences.

Module 2: Principles of Management [30hrs]

This module introduces the essential theories of management and organisational behaviour and their applications at the workplace. Students will learn about the managerial functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling and how these functions help ensure that work activities are completed efficiently and effectively. Students will also be introduced to organisation dynamics such as personality, attitude and perception, learning and motivation, team building and coaching techniques.

Module 3: Practices of Supply Chain Management [30hrs]

This module provides students with an understanding and knowledge of the latest practices in business logistics from a supply chain perspective and from the flows of products and information from a point of supply to a point of consumption. The module covers the theories, concepts, analytical techniques, information flows and managerial practices, economic characteristics and business environment in relation to the design and implementation of systems for supply chain, logistics and transportation activities in both private and public sectors, and in relation to emergency care.

Module 4: Research Methods and Statistics [30hrs]

This module introduces students to the basic concepts and principles of research methodology. It covers areas of research design related to conceptualisation, operationalisation, validation, sampling, and examines various methodologies for data collection. It also introduces statistical concepts and statistical analysis. It aims to equip students with the skills to analyze and interpret findings. The module covers various aspects of probability, descriptive and inferential data analysis.

Module 5: Leadership and Crisis Management [30hrs]

This module provides an introduction to the types of crises, major incidents and disasters. It will also provide opportunities for participants to learn about leadership structures and roles such as planning, organising, and controlling to ensure that work activities are completed efficiently and effectively. It will also increase their awareness in crisis communication and their roles and responsibilities in crisis management for paramedics at a micro and macro levels.

Certification

Participants will be required to complete all modules. Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded the Diploma (Conversion) in Paramedicine by Nanyang Polytechnic.
