Course Introduction and Aims

The Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography aims to equip our students with the knowledge and skills required of an entry level practitioner who is capable of the expert use of radiation systems to treat diseases such as cancer.


The graduates will also be creative problem-solvers and team-players, equipped with transferable skills that will enable them to gain employment and acceptance into degree and professional development programmes.

3 academic years on a full-time basis



Course Learning Outcomes

 The diploma graduate would be able to


 a)  Demonstrate professional behaviours and practice in accordance with legislation and regulations regulating radiation                therapists.

b)   Explain and apply the fundamental principles of radiation production, image production, radiation safety and radiation                protection underpinning radiation treatment procedures.

c)   Explain the risk benefit of radiation treatment procedures to patients and general public.

d)   Perform competently the range of radiation treatment procedures expected of an entry level practitioner.

e)   Operate radiation treatment equipment safely and competently.

f)    Evaluate and apply problem solving strategies to the radiation treatment procedures to ensure best practices.

g)   Explain the side effects as a result from radiation treatment and provide advice on their management.

h)   Explain the ethical, legislative and research framework that underpin the practice of radiation therapists.




Course Educational Objectives

 Our aspirations for the graduates of the Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography are:


  • They will be confident and competent Diagnostic Radiographers who are able to perform the range of diagnostic imaging examinations in various healthcare settings safely.
  • They will foster the independence in learning and to engage in personal and professional development in the field of radiation medicine. 

Clinical Placement


Hospital clinical practice is an essential part of the training of a student radiographer. The objectives of clinical attachment for the students are to ensure that they are integrating clinical experiences with their academic instruction.


Clinical attachments are held both during the semestral period as well as the vacation period. Throughout the course, all students are expected to attend at least 10 blocks of clinical attachment  totaling 35 weeks rostered throughout the three years.


Each hospital has specially assigned Clinical Liaison Supervisor(s) to ensure   their personal well-being and learning objectives are well taken care of.  It is imperative that students have hands-on practice, under the supervision of a qualified radiation therapist. Such supervision and guidance is important as it prepares the students for professional practice upon graduation.

Career Prospects

The demand for radiographers provides graduates with attractive employment opportunities in restructured and private hospitals. Graduates can also seek employment in multinational companies in their medical product divisions. Opportunities for further studies are also plentiful. Graduates can undertake degree level courses in renowned overseas tertiary institutions which offer degree conversion programmes. They may also pursue specialised studies in radiation medicine through the Advanced Diploma in Sonography programme offered by the School of Health Sciences at Nanyang Polytechnic.


Graduates can register as full members with the Singapore Society of Radiographers, which is a member of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists, a worldwide body comprising 60,000 members.
