NYP students win award at prestigious Furniture Design competition

A chair he designed last year won him a Merit Award in the Students’ Category at the Furniture Design Award - an annual competition organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council.

However, Wirawan Hasbi Suryanto still felt that his entry ‘Adam & Eve’, a chair for couples inspired by the beauty of the swan, was still not up to his standards.

“I was still not satisfied with the finishing of the chair,” he said.

So, when this Diploma in Industrial Design graduate made it again as a finalist in the Young Designers Category this year, he made sure that his prototype submitted for the final judging surpassed his own expectations. Understandably so, as he was competing with six other talented designers from the Asia Pacific region, including Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and Taiwan.

Unlike previous years, no specific theme was set this year. The participants had absolute freedom over their furniture creations.

Wirawan’s entry ‘Cadre’ is a chair inspired by art galleries. It allows the user to sense his and her personal space within the frame.

“It was quite a challenge to turn my 3D design into a prototype. This time, I worked very closely with the manufacturer to ensure that the final product remained true to my vision.”

The result is a modern chair and an art piece in itself.

Wirawan received an Honourable Mention Award worth $1000 cash, a trophy and certificate.
