Lim Wei Wen receives a Gold Award in the Arts & Culture category.

Loud cheers filled the Auditorium each time an award winner went on stage at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) Student Talent & Achievement Recognition (STAR) Awards 2017, an annual event recognising outstanding non-academic achievements by NYP students. This year, there were altogether 293 solo award winners and 70 group winners in the six categories: Arts and Culture, Community and Leadership, Innovation and Creativity, Leadership, Sports and Adventure and Special Achievement.

They were conferred Gold, Silver or Bronze Awards based on their level of achievement. Among the Gold winners is Nursriwati Mohd Yusri who stands out for her resilience. Despite coming from a single-parent family and facing several life challenges in her growing up years, she persevered. The Diploma in Mass Media Management student made full use of her time in NYP by actively involving herself in several projects. She serves as the council chief of NYP Community Student Council where she initiated several events to raise awareness for the less fortunate communities. She is also the vice-president of NYP Emcee Club and a member of the NYP Ambassadorial Team. Last year, she led two Youth Expedition Projects to Bintan and Bali. To supplement her family's income, she works part-time whenever there's the opportunity.

Another Gold winner is Lim Wei Wen, a second-year student from the Diploma in Digital Precision Engineering. Besides maintaining an impressive GPA, she is involved in five CCAs that include the Guitar Club, Astronomy Club and NYP Ambassadorial Team. She has also participated in several community services programmes such as Project Paint for the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Community and Boys' Brigade Share-A-Gift Project.

The NYP Touch Football Team received a Group Gold award. This single-gender sport team consisting of only females did NYP proud for with their consecutive number one position at the POL-ITE Games for three years. Despite their difficulties getting a proper training ground, they manage to put in long training hours to emerge as the strongest Touch Football team among the polys.

Organised by Student Development (SD), Star Awards 2017 also featured performances by various CCA groups. But the loudest cheer went to the SD staff who put on cute onesies for a percussion performance.
