I'll Drink To That!

Our SCL colleagues made the headlines on papers and on TV for their breakthrough mutant bug.

The genetically modified bacteria, when given coffee, can efficiently produce a biopolymer that is in turn used to make biodegradable plastic.

SCL's Dr Henry Leung explains that as an avid coffee drinker, he was inspired to explore the project's feasibility when he chanced upon bags and bags of used coffee grounds, and wondered what else they could be used for other than as compost.

This has the potential of not long saving energy from incinerating the coffee waste, but sustainably producing a product that can help the environment.
