Retail Analytics with Splunk

Mr Andy Choy (second from right), regional sales manager from Splunk, presenting the prizes to the happy winners.

The annual Splunk challenge by SIT took on a retail slant this year. With more retailers tapping on technologies to improve their business processes, IT is set to play a prominent role in stores. Splunk - a platform for operation intelligence that collects, indexes and harnesses real-time data generated by applications, systems and infrastructure to provide data analysis and visualization - can lead the way in these efforts.

To test if our students are well-equipped to handle this, they were given machine data of a fictitious donut store. Machine data holds a wealth of timely and relevant business insights. Students then had to analyse the data and come up with visually-appealing charts and graphs. After six hours of data-crunching, SEG student Manzel Joseph Seet emerged the champion. His prize? A MacBook Air. Fellow poly mates from SIT - Tan Jing Zhi and Ang Guang Yao - took second and third placings and scored an iPad Pro and an iWatch respectively. All prizes were sponsored by Splunk Inc.
